A Colonial Heroine Rewarded.
We were shown (says the N.Z, Herald) by Mr G, P, Pierftnanager of the New Zealand Insurance Company, presentations which ho is about to make on behalf of his company. One of these whs a very handsome chain pattern gold bracelet with a plain shield at the opening where the look is inserted, This is encased in a beautiful case of red tuorrocco, the lid of which has on it a silver plate bearing the following ii: iription neatly engraved:— to Miss Mary L, Curtis by the New Zealand Insurance Company, in appreciation of the presence of mind displayed by her in extinguishing the lire on May 4,1888" This was accompanied by another present, a massive silver collar of chain pattern, the fastening of which bears the inscription: Floss from the New Zealand Insurance Company," The explanation of all this is that the Insurance Company have recognised jjfr service rendered them in savin*!- them property worth £ISOO (insured), and appreciated the cool courage (liplujed by the young lady, and the 4» c<t jjof her dog. It appears that on Weight of tho 4th of May, Miss Curtis was with her family, and retired to rest at the usual hour. During the night fehe was awakened by her dog Floss licking, hoi' £aco, and attvactiog her attei,
At Jirst she took no notice, but the dog persisted, and was not only satisfied with awaking his mistress, but by ■jabs, barks, and other canine moveWuts ho showed that lie desired her to follow him. Miss Curtis followed the dog downstairs, and in the kitchen she found that a log of (ire had lumblcd out of tho fireplace, and set tiro to the floor. She did not scream or sing out, or hurriedly open tiic doors and windows to admit as much draught as possible ; but, like a cool, self-possessed girl, she procured a lew buckets of water from the nearest tap, put out the firo thoroughly, went back to bed, and in tho morning told her mother what had taktlv place. It is pleasant to find tho N.Z, Insurance Company, recognising the presence of mind so
aptly displayed, and thero is full - consideration of the sagacity of the dog Iff' Floss, which is thoroughly deserved, and which will no doubt make him a canine celobrity.
