the abolition of the totalisator. IJis expressed himself as being in tavor of restricting the use of the totalisator, and, if mcjssary taxing it for revenue purposes. If 'gambling cn racecourses could be abolished with the suppression of the totalisator, His Worship would be inclined to support the wishes of the deputation, but seeing that doing away with the totalisator would open the doors to wholesale bcttinsgKth bookiiiaksrs, whose transacli|Rs might bo large or small without the public being informed of their extent, he believed that the evils of gambling would not be in any way mitigated should the views of the opponents of the machine be given effect to. The deputation decided to obtain more copies of the petition, and dispose them about the town for signature. At a meeting of the vestry of St, Stephen's Church, Asliburton, held on Thursday evening, it was resolved to invito the congregation to sign the petition.
