THE VOLUNTEER REVIEW.
There were five companies attended at Carterton to take part in the review, in honor of Her Majesty's Birthday, Tho weather was very cold and threatening during the day, but the rain fortunately held off. The Masterton Company was the first on tljjß'ound, arriving there at 10 a.m. Such were the bad train arrangements, however, that they had to wait until ono o'clock for the arrival of the other companies. At one o'clock, the companies from lfeatherston, Greytown, Papawai, Carterton, and Masterton took up their respective positions on the grounds of the Pastoral Sotiety, Alter inspection by Major Bunny, a few words appropriate to tho occasion were delivered by him, and a. feu dejule given in honor of Her Majesty's Birthday. The men were then dismissed. and ordered to fall in at 2.30 o'clock, At the Marquis of Norraanby Hotel, a substantial dinner was provided by Host Bnckeridgfi, which the men fully appreciated. The Masterton men had' been perishing for some three hours with both cold and hunger, kt-the fare soon put them in good fwnor again. At 2.30 the whole of the companies, about two hundred strong, were ma®ed to Mr T. Ray's grounds, a distance of about a mile and a half, the three bands, Carterton, Masterton, and Greytown, accompanying them and onlivcning the proceedings with martial airs. Here, under Sergeant-Major Bezar, the men were exercised in distance judging, The companies were afterwards marched back to the Pastoral grounds, where they arrived just as tho train was leaving for Masterton, and that company had to wait till 8.30 before they could return. The other corps for down the H valley got away about five o'clock, There was no time to go through skirmishing drill, The Fcatherston corps carried the silk colors presented to it by the ladies of that district. Major Bunuy passed high enconiums on'lhe Masterton Corp and said its band was the best in the Yalley. The whole of the corps showed up to perfection however, the Papawai Contingent under Captain Jury t'ounaanding great attraction from tho visitors,
