Masterton Borough Council.
Statutoiy Meeting, A special meeting of the Council was held last night for the purpose of receiving the balance sheet. The Clerk explained that the auditor had taken the balance sheet to Wei-, lington, and had not yet returned it. It was necessary that this meeting should be called to comply witli the Aet. As the balance sheet would likely be returned by the next meeting, it was resolved that the special meeting stand adjourned, until the next regular meeting on the 29 th inst. Income and Exmjndituhh.
His Worship said that as they lmd all but a full meeting, and the business for which they had been called together could not be gone ou with, it might be as well that they should look through the Finance Committee's Report and recommendations for the expenditure of tlio current year's revenue. Of course they could not deal with it, but its consideration then would expedite business at the next meeting.
The report of the Finance Committee, dealing with the reveuue and expenditure of the current year, (as published in yesterday's Daily) was read.
His Worship said the item for street maintenance. £SOO, seemed large, but when divided between the four wards it would be found little enough. There was the question as to whether iUould be done cheaper-by calling for tenders for the road maintenance. It was for them to consider that in due course. With regard to making the pound self-supporting, it was not legal for the poundkeeper to hold the office of ranger. Cr Heron said he was foraierly opposed to such amalgamation or for the poundkeeper receiving the- fees, but in order to make the pound selfsupporting ho wouWuQt object to tko
whole of the fees being divided between the two officers. The Clerk; read the clause in the Act bearing upon the question injg reference to the payment of raiigeriin™ poundkeeper, Tlic Mayor said they might abolish tbo pound and : bug anyone in the R. M. Court whose cattle did any damage to the roads by. wandering at large. ■ :.- The subject was then dropped, Or Gapper asked to refer to a subject which was rather wide of what they were then considering. He would ask that the Clork have power ■ to call tenders tor making and metalling the whole of George-street on tbo : 1 Bentley estate, which was slightly in excess of 18 chains. If tenders were, called for at per chain, tbo sum voted would in the present times probably make the whole streC). , : The Mayor said it was a pity .. a road could not be "carried right : through from George-street to the :■!/£• Upper Plain road. It would havo to run through his property but lie would uofc object to that and .probably Mr Perry would object no more than himself to its.going through his land but. there was Mr Cole to deal with. He ; had spoken to Mr Cole several times. : thereon, but he would not hear of ifafc. The Clerk might write to. Mr Cole Diiv the subject. • The meeting then closed. ' . .
