Singular Suicide of a Domestic Servant. | Dr George Damford Thomas, tlio coroner of Central Middlosox, has held; an inquest at tlio Hornsey Coroner's jj Court, concerning tlio death of Sarah ] Jane Hacher, aged 18. The evidence showed that she was in service at | Stapelton Ilall Road, Stroud Green. On Monday week she retired to bed as usual, and the following morning her mistress, not hearing her about, went to her bed room and found her apparently asleep. As she was not ablo to arouse her, a doctor was summoned, and it was discovered that deceased had taken carbolic acid. She was insensible and died in about threo hours, Two letters were found. In ono addressed to her mother, she said alio had taken carbolic acid because she had broken a looking glass in her bedroom. She asked her mother not to grieve about her as she was not |'Worth'it. In a letter to her mistress she expressed her sorrow for breaking the glass. The coroner, in summing up,said he had from time to time held inquests on servants who had committed suicide through most trilling things having occurred, but which they thought seriously of. The deceased evidently was unable to stand trouble; but it might be that the old superstition that if anyone broke a looking glass they would have seven years bad luck, troubled her. The jury returned a verdict that , the deceased committed suicide whilst of unsound mind.
