Wellington, Tuesday, The body of an infant supposed to be prematurely borne was found on the beach near Oriental Bay this morning. The police are investigating the matter.

A painful and serious accident occurred this morning to a miner named McQniggan. He was walking on a bridge on the Kanieri tramway going tojwork, before daybreak, when he was blinded by a flash of lightning, and fell into the stream below, sustaining a compound fracture of his leg, He lay there some time trying to attract attention, but, failing in this, he crawled to the nearest house, and was soon conveyed to the hospital. His aufiferwere intense, the bone protruding, but he bore the pain heroically. The weather is again a succession ot fierce squalls, accompanied by heavy rain. A largely attended meeting was held this evening to further the early closing movement. .Resolutions were carried affirming the desirableness of shortening the hours of retail business, and pledging the meeting to support Mr Joyce's Shop Hours Bill by largely signed petitions and other means. Substantial subscriptions were received to defray expenses, and it was suggested that a monster public meeting be held.

Brown, late storekeeper of the Public VYorks Department at Hamilton, and who had been missing for some time, were found to-day in the Waikato River. A man named Patrick Sarsfield, an inmate of the Old Man's Befuge, was found dead to-day iu the yard of the Greyhound Hotel The cause of death was heart disease.
