The Novosti states that England's warlike preparations are evidently intended to enable her to take part in d struggle, should it arise, and are manifest evidence of the continuance of an aggressive policy.
London, May 12. Lord Brassey has published a state'
ment to the effect that the Whitworth Factory is supplying, France with heavy guns, to the exclusion ot English orders.
The Headquarters Staff has recommended that the i'irst and Second English Army Corps be immediately placed on a war footing, and that the regulars be supplied with magazine rifles.
In the House of Lords, Viscount Hardinge questioned the Duke of Cambridge as to the authorship of the statements made in the Daily Telegraph on the defectiveness of the
defences of Great Britain. The Duke, in replying, discredited the statements made by the Telegraph, and said he believed the Government fully recognised the importance of the matter. The Imperial Defence Bill, which has just been circulated, provides for the ratification of .the .agreement
lecided at the Colonial Conference
between the Colonial Governments and the Imperial Government concerning the Australasian: naval defences. The authorities intend expending the sum of £850,000 in building and arming a squadron for the Australian waters, the colonies re-paying the amount at the end of 12 years, with 3 per cent interest. The Bill provides also for expending the sim' of £2,600,000 for the defence of ports and coaling stations, the interest of which will be payable out of the Suez Canal dividends.

During a military review at ZarskoeSelo, a town 17 miles south of here, Lieutenant Timofieff fired a revolver at the Ozar, but the shot did not take effect. The lieutenant was immediately arrested.

It is. reported that Sir W. P. D, Jervois, Governor of New Zealand, is likely to be re-appointed for anothei term.
Cabul, May 11.
The Ameer's troops have severely defeated the Dhemshed tribe who revolted in favor of Russia. The tribe were located between Penjdeh and Herat.
Severe fighting has taken place on the Afghan frontier between the Ameer's troops and the rebels. The Ameer restrained the Aherassed tribe from seeking Russian protection, and General Alakanoff has been despatched to assist the Aherasseds.

The Pope has directed Cardinal Monaco to enquire into the practices of the National League, as to whether they are contrary to religion and morality. The decree will he read a second time in the Irish Churches on Sunday. London, May 12. . The Irish Bishops have informed the Pope of their entire submission to the terms of the decree. May 11. The cricket match between the County of Warwick and the Australian eleven was commenced at Birmingham. to-day. In their first innings the Australians made 346, the principal scorers being:—Blaokham 96, Trott 83, and McDonald 46. May 12. The Australians won the match against Warwickshire by an innings and 150 runs.
