Napier, May 14,
The whole of the Hawkes Bay Herald establishment is now lighted by the electric light. The peculiarity of the installation is that the light is supplied from accumulators which are charged in the ordinary day working hours by the gas engines used to work the printing machinery, The light given off is absolutely steady and beautifully brilliant, yet soft. The storage system overcomes the old objection to gas engines as generators of electricity for lighting, as irregularity in charging does not mate. The first cost is greater, but there is a greater economy in the working, as a special attendant at night is dispensed with, and to a largo extent the power now wasted in the daytime can be utilised. Ashcroft and Co., of Wellington, have put in the installation,
