THE WHEEL TIRE BY-LAW.

Public Meeting at Tinui.

A meetisg of ratepayers was held in the Town Hall, Tenui, on Friday evening last, the 4th iijst., to discuss the question of modifying the Broad Tire By-law. Mr Belliss, one of the conveners of the meeting, was voted to the chair. There were about 20 ratepayers present, among whom were Messrs Maunsell and Mackay, the district representatives on the Council, The Chairman explained the difficulties settlers had to contend with on accQiuib of Uw pwirt'Q Py-law,

wliicli prevented the work of tho district during the winter months, A petition addressed to the Chairman of the Council was then read, praying that the Broad Tire By-law be abolished; and bearing the signatures of nearly forty ratepayers. Messrs Mackay and Maunsell were asked if they would urge upon the Council the prayer of this petition, and were also asked if they would vote and support the petition. Mr Mackay replied and said that he would comply with the wishes of the ratepayers, as he always considered it his duty to do so. At the same time he pointed out' the evil of allowing bullock teams to cut up their roads, which had cost the settlers such a large sum of money, and froul his experiencehe thought that the settlers

had not considered the matter before signing the petition. However, if it were the wish of the ratepayers, he would help the matter and do what he could' for them, but they must re- • member he was but one councillor, and there were six others to convince, which he thought a difficult task. Mr Maunsell was of the same opinion as Mr Mackay on this matter, and lie urged the settlers not to go from one extreme to the other, but to modify the by-law to enable the traffic of the district to be carried on. Messrs Speedy and Langdon spoke in favor of abolishing the present bylaw. Before the meeting closed, Mr Mackay urged' the ratepayers to vote, for the £B,OOO loan for metalling and reducing the steep cuttings between here arid Masterton, and pointed out the advantages in reduction of freight &c. A vote of thanks was passed to the Chairman of the meeting, and also to Mr Mackay for his courtesy in attending from such a distance.
