VOLUNTEERS.
There was an exceptionally good muster at the inspection parade of the Masterton Rifles last night, the number of all ranks being 46, the highest for some time. Major Bunny was the inspecting officer, and Captain Donald was in command of the corps. Sergeant Major Bezarwasalsoin attendance. It may be specially mentioned that there were no less than than 24 recruits on parade, and that a number of others were waiting to be sworn in, After parade the the annual general meeting was held, when the balance sheet was presented and adopted, It showed that the corps was in debt to the extent of £24. The principal items of receipt during the year were Capitation, £72155; Captain Donald's collection, £54 5s 6d; subscriptions, JJ37l7s; Drum-Major Bentley's collection, £29 ss; Hall rents, £24 14s; Lieutenant Thompson's collection, £ll. The main items of expenditure were: Bank overdraft £49 14s 6d, erection of butts £l9 17s lid, lighting £1613s sundries £l6 16s Id, gas fittings £ls, subscription to drill hall £l3 ss, match expenses £ll 7s 6a. The Drill Hall construction account showed that a total of £438'15s had been received, iu Government grant and subscriptions, and that L 548 17s 4d had been expended in erecting the building, The general assets showed a preponderance of LlO over liabilities, The total cost of maintaining the corps during the coming year was estimated at sixty-five pounds. The profit and loss account of the recent Masterton Rifle Association Meeting on 80th Maroh showed that the receipts from entrance fees and sighting shots amounted to £1513s 6d, and left a credit balance of 2s over the expenditure in expenses and prizes. The election of a junior lieutenant was next proceeded with. The candidates were Color-Sergeant Dalrymple and Vol, J. Hooper, the voting being six for the former and forty for the latter, Captain Donald therefore declared Hooper unanimously elected, Two applications for a lease of the Drill Hall for skating rink purposes were considered. It was definitely decided that if the shed were let for the purpose it should be on condition that only wooden roller rinks were used. Pinal action in the matter was deferred until to-morrow night.
Tlio Masterton Volunteer Eiflesbavo challenged tlio Wellington City Rifles to a match at Wellington 01112 th May, the contest to bo got off during the morning.
