Masterton Chess Club.

There was a large gathering of players atjthe rooms of the Mastertqn Chess Club last night, when the match Masterton v Opaki was oommenoed. Seven out of the sixteen games were got through, and of these Masterton won five, and Opaki two. The P>ev. Mr Paige had Mr F. Kuramer as Iris opponent, and adopted the solid King's Bishop opening. By Stirling play he won a pieco at)d ultimately the game, Mr Bookell (Masterton), adopted the Petroff defence against Captain floltuwood, and soon after an exchange of Queens obtained a winning position, when his opponent resigned, Mr E. Holmwood, (Opaki) opened opened with the Queens Pawn against tyx jWsoii, an<j playing carefully

obtained an excellent position which won him the game. Mr Bakewell (Masterton) treated his opponent Mr W. Kuraraer, to the Queen's gambit, soon won a piece, and then got in an irresistible attack, when Mr Kumnier resigned. > In the'second round Captain Holmwood played the King's Knight opening against Mr Kawson and won. Mr Rockell, who was matched against Mr B. Holmwood, once more adopted the Petroff defence which again won him the game. Mr Bakewell, who was matched against Mr F. Kummer, adhered to the Queen's gambit, and again won a piece early in the game. The defence from this out was most stubborn, however, and it was nob till White was a castle to the good and had a passed pawn, that black resigned. Play will be resumed next Monday.
