Wairarapa District Hospital Board.
A meeting of the above Board'was held this morning, Present, Messrs M. Caselberg (in the chair), T, Mackay, H, Bunny, Dagg, Braithwaite, and Gapper, Correspondence outwards and inwards was read : From South County Council demurring to contribute £5 15s 8d to the Board's funds as requested, asking for further information on the subject, and referring the Board to the Act, which in their opinion made the Government liable for half the amount in question. Greytown Hospital, soliciting a subsidy of ±'llo. Mastertou Hospital, saying that institution ,j#., would require no help from the Board, J The Chairman said that at the last meeting although there was no quorum they were advised that no help would be required by either Greytown or Masterton Hospital, and now the kit»madeaclaim for £llO. If, howr it were absolutely required, he supposed it would be Ike Board's duty to furnish it, He would like the opinions of members. The demand for subsidy should have been in the hands of the Board by 31st March; it was not, however, and on that date Mr Higgins their secretary stated that Mr F. H. Wood, the secretary of tho Greytown Hospital, had verbally informed him nothing would be required, If the £llO were granted, £55 of it would have to be found jointly by the Borough Councils of Masterton and Greytown, and the two County Councils, and the remaining half by tho Government. The Act was here read to show that claims for subsidy must bo rendered before the 31st March. Mr Bunny considered that the Board had no right to comply with
the demand in contravention of the $ r R d {a Y agreed with Mr Bunny, ■-■'w| thought the Grey town people would havo to get in their subscriptions more thoroughly, that was all. Mr Daggsaid that previous to this, the Masterton Hospital had incurred an overdraft, in the hope of afterwards clearing it off, rattier than look to the Board for support, It was moved by Mr Bunny, seconded by Mr Gapper, and carried, that as up been sent in by either the Masterton or Greytown Hospitals, no levy should be made in respect to providing those Hospitals with funds. The Chairman then referre.l to the South Wairarapa Council's demand to pay the £5 15s 8d claimed from them. This sum was not for subsidy in support of grants to the local institution?, but was a proportion of the expeese due to the general fund for the Board's own expenses, etc, The Government half of all subsidies to local institutions, but were not liable in the latter instance. The South Wairarapa County Council maintained they were, and resisted the claim for the full amount. Mr Bunny remarked that if the inI* formation asked for. by the Wairarapa
South Comity were furnished, that body would no doubt re-consider the matter at their next meeting. This was agreed to, and a resolution was passed accordingly, Mr Bunny applied for his railway! and .coach expenses in attending ihoj Boiiul's meetings. A resolution wasi passed authorising (he Secretary to | pay them, and after another account j had liiitii passed for payment, thuj meeting adiuurned.
