The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, APRIL 14, 1888.
At last evening's meeting Mr A. W. Renall was in particularly lino form, and his racy and amusing onslaught upon the consolidation Bill of the Masterton Town Lands Trust was worth listening to. If Mr Renall had contentedhimsGlf with fairly criticising the weak points of tlje Bill, we should have had to thank him for performing a public service in a genial manner, but unfortunately he allowed himself to be led too far, and he virtually killed the Bill instead of mending it. The Trustees, though they certainly showed an indisposition to fight their own battle, manifested a desire to make a reasonable concession to any well founded objection raised to their measure. The result of the meeting ought to have been a useful consolidating Act, which would have strengthened the administration of the Trust. Mr Renall, however, destroyed any chance of this by the course which he adopted. - A useful measure lias been talked to death,

A most successful rehearsal of "Trial by Jury" was held last night, both chorus, orchestra, and soloists being present in gteater strength than at any previous practice. Considerable progress has been made, and with the enthusiasm now exhibited the performers will undoubtedly score a great success when they publicly produce the opera.
A noyel feature was introduced into the public discussion at the Town Lands Trust last evoning. Mr Payton had exercised his right to reply on a motion which he had introduced, when Mr Hogg rose to speak upon it. Tho Chairmatn looked as if this was' slightly irregular but Mr Kenall at once pointed out that the tiling could be done, What, indeed, cannot bis done at a public meeting when Mr Renall is present,

A peculiar case has engaged the attention of one of tiie English law Courts, The plaintiff, a commercial traveller, brought liia action and obtained damages, .£3B 12s (id, against a refreshment house keeper for an assault, and the defendant set up a counter claim for Blander. It appeared that the plaintiff entered defendant's establishment and ordered a "plaintea." He then went out and bought a crab, which was dressed /or him and served with his tea, On askiuj? what tho charge was the plaintiff was told 9d for the tea and Gd for dressing the crab, attendance, U3O of cruet &c. He objected to the amount, but ultimately paid it, but said it was a "swindle." After some altercation, the defendant ejected the plaintiff, two of whose ribs were broken. Tho plaintiff said this was due to defendant's violence, but defendant said he used no more force than was necdssary to remove plaintiff, who he, said, was abusive. The injuries were, the defendant said, caused by the plaintiff falling over the sill of the door. At tho time of tho mail leaving there was [every possibility of the cost of a " plain tea" being largely increased, the members of tho legal profession having found a detirmened brace of litigants. The Masterton Park Trustees met yesterday. Present—Messrs Payton (in the chair), Hare, Feist, and Boddington. Mr Payton having been re-elected chairman for the current year, the Treasurer reported a credit balance of i4819a sd. It was decided that as money was available for improvements, a road should be formed round the Park Oval, and boidered with trees, Messrs Boddington, Feist and the Chairman were appointed a committee to carry out tho work. It was also resolved that the Government should be recommended to appoint Messrs F 6 Moore and C E Bretnner to the seats on the Trust vacated by Messrs J McGregor and J Vile. The meeting adjourned after fixing the first Thursdays in April, July, October, and January for future quarterly meetings, A fire occurred shortly after threo o'clock on Friday morning, near the Taueru which resulted in the total destruction of a Jireo-roomed cottage, owned by Mr George Parsons, an employee of Messrs Beetham Bros. Tho origin of the fire is a mystery. Mr Parsons was absent from home at the time, and the only occupant of the building was Mrs Parsons, who had barely time to escape in her night clothes. Fortunately for Mr Parsons, he was induced to take out a small policy of LSO on the building in tho National Office last month, but this will not cover half the loss lie has sustained, as the whole of his furniture, clothes, Ac. were uniimred, and have been destroyed.

The Trustees are to be congratulated upon still showing a strong voluntary subscription list ■which enables them to provide for their requirements, We understand that the Champion wire strainer, patented by Mr George Dixon, has been greatly appreciated by those who have had occasion to make use of it, and as a result, Mr Dixon is now finishing off between twelve and thirteen of these little labor-saving machines. In its simplicity and work-saving capabilities, it is no doubt invaluable. . This has had a great deal to do with its increasing popularity in various parts of the Wairarapa, An industrious washerwoman in this town last winter took a job to break stones to support her children, J usb now she is about to increase tho number of her offspring, and is in sad need ot bedding, and other necessaries which she has recently had to dispose of to buy bread. If any ol our lady readers will look up Mrs Neill, of Bentley Street, they will have an opportunity of assisting a deserving case, which calls for some charitable sympathy. The inquest held on the body of Edmund Cording, who was found dead in the Featherston Railway Reservoir, resulted m a verdict being returned of " Found drowned," the jury considering that there was nothing to show how the accident happened, and it could be supposed that the accused was either washin? himself, or trying to get a drink of water at the time of the occurrence, and so have fallen in,

After taking down the programme for their next monthly meeting, the benediction was pronounced and the meeting closed.
