FIRE ON THE UPPER PLAIN.
Destruction of a House and Contents. Shortly after ten o'clock this morning a fire broke out in a four-roomed house occupied by Mr J. Creelman, on the Upper Plain road, adjoining the railway line. The first alarm was given by Mr Win. Rooks, who was working a short distance away on the railway line.' The blaze at this time was confined to a small portion of the roof on the eastern sido of the building. Ho immediately gave the alarm to several other workmen, including Mr Creelman himself, but owing to the heavy wind that was blowing the building was almost razed to the ground before they could render any assistance. From what we could learn, it appearsL, ,; Mrs Creelman was attending to liefr' household duties and was not aware' ; the house was in danger of fire until the whole of the roof was in flames. In fact, so sudden was the outbreak that the unfortunate occupants were unable to save little beyond the clothes they stoodup in. The fire is .4 supposed to have originated through a (,<■ spark alighting on the roof from the O chimney, This supposition is fully borne out by. Mr Book's statement that he first observed the flames, on the top of the house in a direct line - with the chimney. In addition to the destruction of the building, a dairy, and several cords of firewood were destroyed. General sympathy is expressed for Mr Creelman, whois unin- - sured, and being a laboring man, can ill afford the loss he has sustained, The house, which is owned by Mr J, Mace, is insured in the Naitionaf Office for £IOO, but he estimates hisr •loss at fully £7O over that amount. ! - l -
