Annual Report of Education Board.
The annual report of the Education Board showed the- number of children attendiuff, the Board's schools to be males and 4645 females, dassifiltus follows:—s and under 7 ' years of age, 1567; 7 and under 10, 3481; 10 and under 13, 3550; 13 and over 15,147; of which 2830 are in Class P, 1635 in Standard in Standard 1., 1454 in Standard 11., 1384 in Standard 111., 1110 in Standard IV., 745 in Standard V., 426 in Standard VI., and 29 in Standard VII. There are 35 Maories and 84 half-castes included in the foregoing. New buildings had been erected at Mangaone, Paikakariki and Karori South, Additions have been made to the Fernridge, Hutt, and Petone Schools, and altera- -"-■ tions and repairs to the Carterton, Kaiwarra, and Newtown Schools. A site has been secured for a school in Clyde Quay. Tho teaching staff numbered 242, including 15 teachers of _ sewing. Tho report after giving a jyist (which has already been published Mm these columns) of those who had scholarships, continued : "Tho Government have withdrawn all aid to the Training College tho closing of that institution was neces- —. but-the economy was not to be i'egrettmas the cost of training the few stuuents was out of proportion to the practical results achieved. The report stated that Mr Riley, the drawing master, had done good work in the public schools, and that teachers, pupil teachers, and students attended the School of Design. Good progress was made, many of the teachers travelling a considerable distance at their own expense, for instruction, The examiners spoke very highly of the work done at tho examination. L96918s Id had been spent on rent and in repairs to buildings, and £375 12s on the School of Design, and the Board hopes that assistance will be granted to the School of Design as promised by tho late Minister of Education. The Board granted Mr Lee leave of absence to visit England, and the examinations have been carried on satisfactorily in his absence. Mr report was also laid on the M table,
