A NEW MOTIVE POWER.

Mr J, Cuff, a Hastings lawyer, lias discovered a new means of ship propulsion " by means of her, so to speak, own water." He, as becomes a great inventor, thus descants on his discovery:—"l use the displacement power of tli3 sea or other water caused by the ship's own weight to drive Pelton or other motors, so as to turn a screw and first put the vessel in motion, or slio may be first put in motion by means of steam, or sails, or otherwise. When in motion she is driven at very great speed by means of two tubes running through the ship fore and aft, open to the sea at both ends, and as the ship is propelled against the sea, the water thereof must of necessity be freed through the tubes, and as it passes through the said tubes it is utilised to turn two water motors encased in iron boxes, one on each side of the ship, which motors turn two other screws, so the vessel is driven by three screws, but the tubular power screws are the principal driving or propelling powers, and the faster the ship goes the greater the force of the water to turn the tubular motors; so, in fact, it is impossible tojudge the rate of speed attainable, and no fuel is needed, and as 110 portion of the ship is occupied by boilers and steam machinery, the saving in expenses will be enormous," It seems to us that under Mr Cuff's plan, his only trouble will be to keep the vessel from perpetual motion.
