Rifle Association's Meeting. p Oamaru, February 27, t There is capital weather for the opening of the New Zealand Rifle Association's meeting, which is being held on the Oamaru Race Oourso, Lieut-Colonel Mahon, of Auckland, has been appointed to command, ho having resigned his position as member of the Executive Council, to enatfe him to occupy tho position. There are 255 competitors in the first match which commenced at 10.30] this morning, of whom 187 aro riflemen, and 68 are carbines, Tnranaki and a few of the Wellington representatives, who were to leave by the Takapuna are expected to-day. Competitors are highly pleased with the range, which has a dark green back-ground, the only lanlt found being with the direction, which is north-west. Misses will easily bp seen, the ground at tho rear oi the BHHk target having recently been harrowed, ißt There are twenty targets, and Captains V Collins and Somerville are sanguine of completing tho whole meeting by Saturday evening. Tho arrangements arc very complete, and include a Telegraph Office ran the ground, while there is a Telephone connection between tho range and the butts. Prize money was based on the assumption that there would bo 820. competitors, so at a, meeting of the Executive Council just held it was decided that .-£25 be struck off tho rifle matches, and £SO off the carbine matches, including the aggregates. Lieut. Griffiths of Blenheim has been appointed a member of the Executive Council, vice Captain Eodgers absent, and Captain Cooper fills Colonel Mahon's vacancy for the North Otago match. .£l2O has been subscribed by the people of Oamaru, and as donations will be all cash, there will bo no trophies for this match, SPORTING.
