Kurupuni Wesleyan Sunday School Anniversary.
The annual gathering of the above was held at Kuvupuni yesterday, and despite the inclemency of the weather was & financial success, Fully one hundred persons sat down to the spread, which was laid out in the hall, and consisted of the usual delicacies, provided by Mesdaraes Matthews, McLennan, Shnle, Pybus and Miss Pelling. During the afternoon the youngsters were treated to the usual outdoor gatnos by their teachers in a paddock kindly lent by Mr Pybus. The public meeting which followed in the evneing was largely attended, every available seat in the hall being taken up, The Sunday School children who occupied the platform sang several appropriate selections which reflected great credit, not only on themselves, but also on their leader Mr S. Boult, the singing being greatly appreciated by the audience, The chair was occupied by the Rev. J. N, Buttle who paid a high compliment to the various officials on the proficiency which the school had attained, and trusted the day was not far distant when they would have a school building of their own. Mr Eoult, after addressing a few well-chosen remarks to those present, read the following report : The marked feature of our school during the past year has been the regular attendance of the scholars and most of tho teachers, the average attendance for the four quarters only varying five scholars. Attention has been given to the teaching of catechism and committing to memory portions of the scripture. Some of the girls have shown themselves especially proficient, two of the Bible Class scholars having committed to memory upwards of 500 verses each in two quarters, - The children have also been encouraged in writing essays on Bible subjects. These essays are read by the superintendent to the school, and have often evidence of much research, Oar library is largely used by children and parents, and the volumes have been thoroughly read, and we are now in much need of a new supply. A collection is made once in each month on behalf of the Home Mission Fund, The money produced from the girls' and boys' box amounted to lis 7 Ad. Our members at present on the roll are altogether 105, boys 58 girls 47, teachers 10. The average attendance for the year is 66 scholars and 8 teachers. -S. Boui/r, Secretary.
A recitation and a solo were then given by Miss Lilly Armstrong and Miss Pelling, both of which were nicely rendered and loudly applauded. These were followed by an address from Mr Grundy who expressed the keen interest he felt in the moral culture of the children, and was glad to see the school in such a prosperous condition, His sympathies were with Sunday School teachers, andhs thought parents should givo more attentiou to the religious instruction of their little ones, Parents should look well to this matter, for their happiness and future wellfare depended largely upon the training which they received at home. A recitation by Miss Edith D'Arcy and a duet by Miss Lily Arnißtrong and Tilly Hewitt wero greatly appreciated. Mr Graham followed with a stirring address in his usual masterly style, after which votes of thanks were unanimously accorded to those ladies who so kindly provided the tables, to Mrßoultwho had so ably conducted the singing, and to Miss Perry who had so efficiently presided at the organ, A very pleasant meeting was then terminated with prayer, »———^n«
