Nels4 February 18. A fine specimen of Californian salmon 80in long/ 21in girth, and 17lbs weight, was capturedw the Motupiko river yesterday. v

Exporting Quartz for Gold Ex* . traction. .

'Auckland, February 18. This morning 460 bags of crushed quartz were brought from the Adeline mine at Karangahape, and 45 bags from the Maritoto claims. The stuff is to be despatched to Qojtfpy to be treated by the gold extracting process.

Slavin-Laing Fight ftxed.

Wanganui, February 18.

A deposit of £2O a Bide/has. been made with.Mr A. J.Parsons'by Slavin and Laing to fight for the boxing champion of New Zealand, the belt £BOO a side and all gate money. Articles are to be signed oil Monday night. The fight to take place otfjfto 10th April. ■

Retrenchment in Defence Department, £ , ■ t Wellington, February 14.. . Reductions in the Defence Department include eight officers and 50 men. The names of the officers who have resigned or have been dispensed;. with are Major General Whitmore, Lieut.. Col. Boddam, Lieut. Col. Roberts, Majors Scannell and Gascoigne, Captains Capel and Baker, and Dr Campbell, surgeon. Reductions : are still being made amongst the men and the above reductions are independent of those effected in Works Department, In the Volunteer Department seven instructors and commanding officers have been dispensed with and , the allowances of other commanding officers have been reduced. The schoolof musketry has been abolished and the whole of the adjutants have 1 been reduced by £6O per annum.
