Corporation Retrenchment,
Sydney, January 16. The City Corporation have determined to carry out large retrenchments, and 250 men have already received notice that their services will be dispensed with. An annual saving of £85,000 will thus be effected. It is expected that further reductions will follow, M. Pasteur and the Rabbits. Melbourne, January 16. ... The officers of the Babbit Department are opposed to the experiments proposed by M. Pasteur. January 17. . Letters received from Paris state that M. Pasteur is satisfied that chicken cholera is the best means of eradicating rabbits, and that he inteuds to send a consignment of microbes to the Australian Governments, with instructions for its use. M.Pasteur states that the inoculation requires the greatest care, and the rabbits only live a few hours. The microbes are fatal to hares and opossums, but will not harm sheep or kangaroos, A Ship Burnt at Sea. Sydney, January 17. The Americau ship J. T. Berry, bound from Philadelphia to Japan, took fire at sea on the Othinst. The fire spread over the vessel so rapidly that the crew had barely time to escape, which they did in two boats.
