Captain Edwin wired at half-past twelve to-day predicting a heavy gale from beween North East, and North and West, also further fall of glass.
From a gentloinan who has jrofc beon travelling in the Rangitikei district we learn that pasturage there at present is looking-much greenor and fresher than here, and this is especially the case in the neighborhood of Bulls. The crops in that locality are, as in our district, looking exceedingly well. The hay yield there, too, is quite phonomenal. Messrs Davis and Co., the well known highly esteemed proprietors of the Well ington labor exchange, and shilling registry office, have several advertisements in our wanted columns which should commend themselves in search of employment and also to country employ. m who wish to be well suited with servants.
Mr W. Dunnage has been taking some fine fish from the lower waters of the Avon lately, remarks the Christchurch Press. On Saturday night he took a fino brown trout out weighing 151b, and last night lie landed a fish, which is said to be a veritablo Californian salmon, weighing 131b. The shape of the fish and'tho marks thereon denote the class to which it belonps. Several anglers are of opinion that the fish belongs to the class mentioned, An advertisement appears in'our business columns relative to Owen's Patent New Zealand Sheep Dip. This wellknown dip is a most valuable agent in preventing and exterminating Bcab, lice, ticks, lung worm, and foot rot m sheep, and it not only does this, but it also brightens and cleans the wool, at the same time promoting its growth and increasing its value. The dip is at once an economical and effective one, and many certificates in its favor are quoted, The local agents ,are Messrs Lowes and lorns, We have several times been asked in connection with last Saturday night's boxing match if the fight wore likely to be a brutal exhibition, and oi;e repulsive to spectators. We can now answer the question. There was nothing whatever about the contest in question of at all au objectionable nature; in fact, this seems, judging by the remarks of the spectators to have been its great drawback. Of course there is a happy medium, but at the same time, there is no doubt that if some of the more blood thirstyof the individuals who frequent .such innocent amusements had what they call their shilling's-worth, the unfortunate vanquished one would not only -be knocked " out of time," but into eternity in one and the same act,
An interesting cricket match will take place at Greytown on Friday, January I 27, between teams representing the ftorth County country cricketers, and ' the South County, cricketers, This i match is, we believe the "first of its kind ! that has been arranged, and providing the weather is fine and the players who are chosen turn up, the match ought to | be a very close one. The following are the probable names of the two teams:Southern Team-VY. E. Bidwill. 0. Bidwill, P. Pearce, Rawson, Reid, Cuff, fl. Bunny, P. Tancred, 0. Ranißden, J. McMaster, 0. Phillips, Rutherford. Northern Team - Messrs H, Elder, Walker, H. Warren, C. Kebble, Drew. T. L. Thompson, J. E. Stokes, 0 Hood, H. Williams, Whatman, Sclby. ' . It has been pointed out to us.that a great risk exists at present through people in the neighbourhood of the Borough allowing grass to remain unmown. There is no doubt that the risk of fire spreading from this cause is very consideiable and this, perhaps, is especially applicable to the Masterton Park and the Cemetery, the former of which has been on fire two or three three times already in previous years. In some caßos, the grass is probably hardly worth cutting as far as the hay itself is concerned, but it certainly ought to be removed for the reason we have indicated. A by-law on the subject would bo very serviceable, but we understand the Borough Council would need empowering by Parliament before a law regulating the cutting of the grass could be enforced by them. Two other localities are mentioned a? especiallyoffending the Railway lino and tlje fjelds at the eastern end of Bannistor-st,' Masterton is a Borough which especially needs'attention in this respect, for it includes so many suburban sections. We hope the warning we have given will be regarded by Mip,se landowners who have been careless in this matter. At this time of the year grass and especially native grass 'is very inflammable. From exchanges just received, we notice that a match carelessly thrown down amongst the dry grass at the Rangiora Raoecourso, caused a fire which burning stacks, stables &b, did £IOO worth of damage,' Queen street all day on Saturday was the scone of unusual interest, inasmuch as Mr 4, W, Benall and his men were engaged, regardless of all but the attainment of their object, in laying down the culverts for the water supply which its ingenious originator has decreed shall irrigate Masterton's chief thoroughfare. Mr Renall had finished the Post Office culvert soon .after twelve o'clock, and though not (mite ready with the Perry street flume, he decided to turn on the tap, and so just after three o'clock it was announced that the- water was ooming. •The stream quickly began to flow round the Post Ofnce corner, and it ultimately advanoed, to the evident joy of the onlookers, as far as Perry street. No arrangement having been made to convey the water past this point, it was then turned off. It takes a lot to satisfysome. people. We actually overheard a well known angler.on Saturday askiug Mr Eenall if he intended to stock his stream wjfjitroutl

After paying all Btakea and liabilities in connection with tho recent meeting, tho Featheraton Racing Club has a credit balance of L1215s 4d. From a report just rocoived from his doctor, we hear, that Ernest France is progressing. very favourably. The case however, is still an anxious one. • The best way to get to the Waihoine Reels is.said to be, by going over Mount Holdsw ortli and thence down the creek running into the Waihoine. river. To attempt to get up the Waihoine from the foot, of the hills is almost'. useless,' tho gorge is rough, and dangerous. The Rev. Mr Buttle in his sermon last evening in the Wesleyan Church remarked " God knows we want a new set of Councillors" This was slightly rough on one or two members of tho municipal body who have been somewhat closely' identified with the churohover which the Rev gentleman presides. During the year just ended, the total sum sued forin the Wairarapa R.M. District was £478210s 3d. This is slightly in excess of the amount for the previous two or threo years. The number of civil summonses issued for the sameperiod was 574, and the'criminal summonses and arrests numbered 281. It should be explained that the district includes Masterton, Carterton, Greytoivn, Feathers? ton, and the smaller outlying places. ' '■ Out of the 83 entries for the various handicaps m the Amalgamated Friendly Societies Sports 43 are from members of' the Masterton Red Star Football Club, . The report'of Mr Breinner, the County Engineer, has been received-, and shows that he has been found four quarries of good stone in the Tinui district, easily' available for,'-road' metalling. We will publish the report in fall to-morrow. A poll is to be taken in the Upper Taueru Eoad District, on the proposal to borrow £540 for road metalling purposes. The County Council's advertisement appears in anothercolumn, Messrs Lowes & lorns add to their Stock Sale for Wednesday next 200 fat ewes lfi head cattle, 16 head of beef, 6 steers, 2 fat cows, and 7 head young cattle. The following privileges for the Amalgamated Societies Anniversary Day Sports were sold at auction by Messrs Lowes &' lorns on Saturday last. Gates (G. Dixon) £4O; Eefreshment Booth (Pelling), £G; Fruit and Fancy Goods (Ming) £l2s Gd; Programmes (R. Hatch) 5s 6d; Games (Holmes), 5s- The publican's booth was passed- iu at £5. The Californian pump has proved to be too heavy work for one man. There is no doubt it is a rather large one, and similar pumps which we have seen used in other towns for the same purpose were much smaller when.intended to be one man appliances. A slight alteration was made in the wheel on Saturday, but it has not afforded much relief. A smaller pump altogether-lock, stock and barrel-is the remedy. The Masterton annual Earn and Fair is announced to be held in Messrs Lowes and lorns saleyards on the Bth February. Entries must be lodged on the Ist proximo. Some more samples of stone were brought in from Tinui on Saturday last. They contain sparkling indications of metal, but its exact nature has not transpired. One rumour says it is silver, while another less sentimental names lead as^ke.preciousoi'e. MrH.C.Haseldenof Cuba-street, Wellington announces a grand clearing sale of his magnificent stock of books, stationery, fancy goods, &c„ during the present month. All purchasers will be allowed 10 per cent discount on books and stationery, and 15 per cent on toys. Full particulars will be found on reference to our advertising columns. Dr Hosking notifies that during his absence in Wellington for a few days, Dr Milne will take charge of his practice. The doctor has gone to attend the Supreme Court hearing of the case Wardell v Hosking, In the Masterton Tennis Club's Single Championship, Mr H. Holmes beat Mr D, Donald, on Saturday in the first round. A Single Handioap game was also decided, Mr P, H. Cox beating Mr J, Stokes, During the afternoon choice was made of colors for the Ckb. Moroon and white were adopted.
