FIRES AT CROSS' CREEK.
TWO HOUSES DESTROYED. Two fives occurred at Cross' Creek, Peatherston, which resulted in tho t destruction of two cottagos. From [■ what wo could gather as our repre- ■'' tentative passed through in the train last evening, it appears the first firo took place about 11 a.m. in a four-roomed cottage, owned by Mr Allen, who is employed as fireman on one of the large railway engines. Tho alarm was first given by Mrs Allen, but owing to a stiff breeze, which was then blowing, the cottago with nearly the whole of the contents, was destroyed; From the burning building the fire spread among the stumps and trees, destroying a good deal of fencing and grass. At 4 p.m., the wind &gain freshened, and carried the sparks in all directions, and in spite of the exertions of volunteers, the flames caught M'*G. Bartlett's fiveroomed cottage, which shared the same fatoas Mr Allen's. This house was occupied by three men, who are engaged as cleaners, and they with great difficulty only succeeded in saving their'boxes, the balance of their property being destroyed. Aiuininsured cottage, owned by Mr Hall had already been on fire twice, prior to the k* train leaving Cross' Creek, and unless W> the wind, which at that time was blowing right on to the Engine Shed, and the rest of the cottages, had abated, there is every probability of the greater portion of the buildings being destroyed. We learn that Fire- ' man Allen's cottage was insured for £75, but he will bo the lo3er of fully that amount besides. Bartlett's place was also iusured, but to what exteut is not known. We were informed that the men who lived in the house were losers, but not heavily.
