The Victorian loan of one million and a half, at 4 per cent is announced, The minimum has been fixed at 104, and the loan is already quoted at 8 per cent, premium. 85 per cent will be payable on 21st January. The Wharf Laborer's Union and the Stevedores' Association are at loggerheads. The former are insisting on being allowed to discharge steamships as well as receive an officer to. re-organise . his cargo on the wharves, The Stevedores' Association supplied men to do both classes of work, arid further complications are expected.

One hundred thousand persona are reported to be drowned, and two millions have been rendered homeless, and are in a state of starvation. THE NEW QUEENSLAND GOLDFIELD, Brisbane, January 5. The Croydon goldfield, discovered a few months ago is developing richly, and a large quantity of gold has already been sent down. There is now a considerable population on the field. One mine has returned 12oz per ton from 120 tons of stone.

A, Wood, curator of intestate estates, who, levanted two years ago, is, it. appears, now a resident of Corregidor, a city of Northern Mexico, where he has a fine estate of 100,000 acres. Wood married a wealthy Mexi. can lady, although his wife is in this city, and when he levanted he eloped with another woman. It is asserted that influence was brought to bear to prevent the police pursuing him energetically.
