The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, JANUARY 7, 1888. THE BLUE SKY IN THE DISTANCE.

It is quite evident that careful, reliable persons, who aro not wont to form hasty opinions, and who do not usually err by being too sanguine, anticipate a moderate revival in trade this year. The New Zealand harvest promises to be an exceptionally abundant one, and this, factor alone is one that must tell upon the general prosperity of the Colony. We have now come to a point when our welfare depends more upon our productive power, than on our capacity to scheme, and therefore our harvest is a very important consideration. We understand too, that financial experts are of the opinion that during the present year, gold will be more fluid.. During the past twelve months, there has been an increased output of the precious metal in Australia and in New Zealand, aud we shall reap a benefit this year from this source. Then again the increasing returns of our meat export, although prices are unremunerative, are bringing money into the country, or what means the same thing, retaining it here. The outlook of this year would seem to be increased productive power and an increased market at somewhat lowrates. These conditions, assisted by the wave of retrenchment which has undoubtedly set in, must restore a feeling of confidence throughout the Colony, and stimulate industrial, pastoral, and agricultural enterprise.
