A PARLIAMENTARY JOKE.

MR TAYLOR, M.H.R, Amongst; the jokes of last session, the following is not by any means the worst, Mr Taylor was delivering an extremely lively and festive address on tho Education question at 1.30 a.m. Hon. members, wearied to death with Ait Lord Salisbury culls the " dreary d® of dilatory discussion,"surrendered tmWIvHS altogether to the luxury of laughing with or at the member for Sydenham, who was diwihing schools that he -had seen, ''Sir," said Mr Taj lor," I have a school in my eye," (Immense laughter), '■ No," cried Dr Fitchett quickly, "Only a pupil Air Taylor." Subsequently the last mentioned orator convulsed his hearers by. the remark, "I am not a journeyman Taylor—(roars of laughter)--1 mean to say I am not Jeremy Taylor. I cannot claim to have the eloquence of a Jeremy Taylor. (Renewed laughter) Sir, lam absolutely astounded at the. frivolity of some hon, members, I hope some day to have the pleasure of saying what I think of thein in another place, (Laughter), Yes, I think' the Government might well call to another place a representative of the great industrial classes,"—Standard.

GROWTH OF CHICAGO. American writer' lias recently pven it as liis opinion that the city, of Chicago is the commercial centre of; : a '• surrounding country destined, within »<■ a lifetirao, to contain 100,000,000 of industrious and thrifty people. The population of London is to that of England and Wales as four to twentysix. Should the population of Chicago ever hold the same relation to the population of the tpn great States that encircle and are commercially tributary to her as London holds to England and Wales, her census, will, it is estimated, show the enormous total of 20,000,000 of souls. Nor is. this to be wondered at when one considers ■ 'that she is the queen city, the centre and outlet of such an agricultural area as can nowhere else be found on the globe; that she is already the third manufacturing city of the American continent; that the total value of her trade is more than 1,000,000,000d01s per year; and that 15,000 vessels arJked at and sailed from her wharves sat year, with a tonnage of nearly 5,000,000,-Iron.
