BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.

The ordinary ■. monthly" meeting -of j the North Wairarapa Benevolent Society was held yesterday, afternoon (Wednesday).at tho Institute. Pre-: sent—Revs. W.' E. Paige (chairman), D. Fulton, J. N. Buttle, Messrs W, H. Beetlmm, J. B. Keith, and S. E. Gapper. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence inwards was read as follows:—From Mr T. Mackay, Chairman North Wairarapa County Council re assistance for E. L. Cottain, who had been sent from the Whareama district ill and destitute. Secretary United District Board,' stating that following local bodies were entitled to elect Trustees to the Society under the "Hospital and Charitable Institutions Act Amendment Act, 1886," as contributing bodies:—The Wellington City Council, North Wairarapa, South Wairarapa, Hutt, andiHorowhenua County Councils, and the Boroughs of Mastertoii aud Greytown. The number of trustees to be elected were not to exceed nine, of which number the voluntary subscribers' were to elect two,

A report was read from the Secretary respecting Louis Pode, who has been for a considerable time on the Society's books, and who, from the nature of complaint, required extra attention. It was decided to allow Gsaweek extra to the.person now looking after Pode, bringing tho amount to £1- a week. The Chairman reported .that Christiansen, the man who was hurt at the Femridge about three months ago, while bushfalling, had been sent to Wellington Hospital, and that two other men had been forwarded on by the Society to their respective homes, as they were ill and destitute.

The Chairman's actions in these matters were endorsed.

Accounts amounting to Ll9 6s Od were passed for payment. The question of the election of Trustees for the Society under the new regime was considered, when : it was decided to write for. further information on the Subject, as the Act was somewhat vague, and entirely beyond the comprehension of the present Trustees; ■ . The Chairman slated that he had spoken to Mr G. Beetham, MiH.li, on the subject, who had informed him that the other Socittes under the Act were in a similar fix," and the Government had referred the Act to the Law officers, to see if there was a way out of the 'difficulty, The Secretary was instructed to convene the annual meeting, of subscribers for Thursday next, the 12th inst, at the Institute, Masterton, at 4.80, for the election of two trustees. The usual cases of relief were considered, and ordered to be continued at previous rates. The meeting then adjourned.
