The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1887.
The .New Zealand Mutual Creditors Association has issued an admirable combined almanac, commercial handbook, and diary for 1888, and wo have much pleasure in acknowledging tho leceipt of a copv from Mr W.> Sellar, who is tho Association's local agent. The book is one of the most covenieut publications of the kind we have seen, and (he information it contains is apparently in inexhaustible. Our Eketahuna correspondent informs us that a Concert and Ball in aid of the Cricket Club, is to be held in Mr John Tuck's Town Hall on Monday next, 2nd January, "and that various Masterton friends have kindly consented to supplement the local talent on the occasion.
An accident happened in Queen-stroet, Masterton, lust night, a foreigner, named Toucher, being thrown from his hor3e, when passing Mr Nicholson's shop, The man, who at first seemed stunned, and had received a sevoro flesh wound, was brought round under fcho kind attentions of a sympathising crowd, and was soon on his way again, Withtomorrow's issue we shall publish cur üßual pictorial almanac. The subject of it this year is " To be left till called for," and the picturo represents a charming voung lady depositing a letter, —evidently for her lover—in a nook n» top of an old cabinet, The scene is apparently laid in an early English country Hall, and the surroundings are quaintly pretty. ,
• ; Professor' Driver (Kudarz)'and Mrs Driver give another two entertainments in the Theatro Royal, Masterton next Saturday; one in the afternoon and' the' qther in the oveoiflg. As exponents of magic and sleight of hand, Professor Driver and his talented wife have not equals in the Australian colonies, and the programme on this occasion ' presents entirely, new features, mesmeric clairvoya'ney. thouglit reading, tho cabinet mystery,-and numerous other wonderful feats, and tricks nil having attention at the hands of t]ie performers. The doors open for the matinee at 2,30., and for the e-eoing entertainment at 7,30., and as the prices aro low, there should be a gond attend, ance of the public, On Saturday last five youths alighted at the ftopuaranga Railway station equipped with guns, ammunition, a tent, and a small assortment of cooking utensils. They had just arrived from Wellington for the express, purposo of hunting wild bulls on Mount jjoldsworth, one of the lordly eminences ivjiioh crop the ranges to the westward of Masterton. The leader of the gallant band was a Dunedlnito who for the first time in his existence was About to traverse the native bush of His country, After refreshing the inner man at Host Osborne's Hostelry the valorous five made tracks forthe bush and, as tho shades of evening foil, camped in a sweet glade, about a couple of miles beyond the Hotel. While the shadas lengthened the Dunedinifce began to count the number of wild bulls that he was about to shootonthemounjajns, anddilated upon the free and happy IJfe.of the hunter in the Kcw Zealand forest, but when night wrapped the party in her dim mantle, a, buzzing sound arose which somewhat disconcerted the wild bull chasers. From all parts of the bush swarms of inquisitivo 'mosquitoes appeared to emergo and to concentrato on the, visitors, and-' each mosquito apparently had yqired an oath to penetrate the softest portion of the Dunedlnito frame—this we need •hardly' say was hi 3 head, Through a long night of agony, the four comrades of the Dunedinifce heard from the ljps ,of their leader a perpetual stream of language more denunciatory than the Athanasian creed, and when the early morn lit! up the head of the efriof of the wild bull chasers they ga?ed on what appeared to bo a very badly, diseajod pumpkin. In vain tlyoy tried to soothe the feelings of their leader by promising him unlimited wild bulls in the recesses of the bush; He caved in altogether and would go no further, but returned forthwith to Wellington a sadder and a wiser man. His comrades aro, we believe still chasing the-wild bull on the slopes of Mount Holdswo'rth, and let us hope that they, may achieve the object of their ambition, and that .the Dunedinite has found in the Bmpirg pity a salvo for his irritated cuticle, ; : •'

When the. water-cart question was under discussion at the Borough Council's meeting last night, the Mayor said that, his water scheme would provide for road and footpath irrigation, and upon being asked iii what way, he explained that he would dam the channel and thus cause the water to back up on to the footpath and road. Tho Council apparently regarded'the proposal with horror, and evidently looked upon the idea as being next door to converting Qucen-stroot into a canal with steamboats plying up and down, and with tho. institution, of Saturday afternoon regattas. It lias boon pointed out that it is not often a Governor's message to a Loralature is addressed from a theatre, but this was actually the case tho other night, His Excellency the Governor was enjoying "Takeri from life" at the Opera House, when a Ministerial messenger arrived requiring the Governor's signature to a message to the House. Pen and ink having been procured his Excellency signed the formal document while sitting in tho front of the circle, and the messenger returned to the House with all possible despatch. We are requested to draw attention to Messrs Jas. IJrown & Go's adverlisament of goods to be sold by auction to-morrow. Tho list comprises furniture, merchandise, sundries', which will be sold without re-' nervation, ■
