The Social Gathering in connection with St. Matthew's Ladies Guild will bo held in tho Church of England Schoolroom to-night. A Christmas tree, fruit, and flower stalls, brantubs. and various other objects of interest, a'nd amusement have been provided for the diversion- of'visitors.
Tke local hay crop is well forward, notwithstanding the fact that fields were lato in starting, and were kept very short before being shut off. The yield is both early and heavy, and rye grass has been in flower for about a month. The existing' warm weather will, as with the grain crops, hurry thiii'S along very quickiy if it lasts.
Tho following telegram has just been received from our Oteytown correspondent:—" A piece of quartz, .with particles of gold in it, was exhibited at tho Standard Office tins morning. It was picked up in the Waiohine River yesterday by an old digger. Several persons here intend ,to. spend their .holidays in prospschw, but it needs practical men to test the country in a systematic manner."

The excursion train from Welliugton arrived at Masterton at 3,30 this morning. There woie a fair number of passengers, but it was noticed that a good few who went down yesterday morning did not return, having stopped away for the Christmas Holidays, Quito a large proportion of the travellers were Greytown people, and got out at Woodside.
