The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER 21,1887. MINERAL FINDS.

The recent discoveries of precious stones at Eketabuna, of coal at Fenii'idge, and auriferous quartz up the Waiohine River, are of importance, notwithstanding the fact that the rubies are microscopic in their dimensions, the coal mere casing, and the quartz a solitary specimen, The prominence which is now being given to these finds will induce mining experts to further test the ranges in this district. Apparently, the Geological Department is taking a lively interest in all the finds, to which we have referred, and though Sir James Hector may be a little reticent in expressing an opinion as to the mineral prospects of this district, it is very evident that lie is just now giving them a large share of his attention. Wo believe that mining experts will shortly' be fossicking after our rubies, our coal, and our gold, and this is all we require., Persons, who have no ; practical skill m' mining would be extremely foolhardy'if they were to attempt to develop the mineral vealth with which there is some reason to believe this district is endowed. All that is needed now is the services of competent prospectors. No doubt now, public attention has been called to recent discoveries, some pressure will be put upon Sir James Hector to give the information which has been gathered by his department with reference to them. A short time ago, Sir James referred in vague terms to the Eketabuna discovery as something of importance, but our reporter who was interviewing him could not obtain any particulars from him. Nothing duunted, however, our reporter went to Ekelahuna, and found out then without much trouble the secret find of which he had received a first hint from the chief of the Geological Department. We are promised by a resident who has taken a special interest in prospecting for eoal, full particulars in a few days of the result of his researches. We hope for some time to come to be ablo to lay before our readers further evidences of the mineral wealth of thp Wairanp,
