INSTALLATION OF MAYOR.

The annual installation of His Worship the Mayor of Masterton (Mr A. W. Jtlenall) took place at noon to-day, in the Council Chambers. Present: The Mayor, (Mr M. Caselj berg), Councillors Muir, Elkius, T. I Chamberlain, Hessey, Heron, Gapper, Carman and Culleu.

The Mayor thanked the councillors for the courteous manner they had treated him during his term of office, they had not had an angry word, and their discussions had been conducted in a maimer becoming the dignity of the Council. He could safely say that the affairs of the Borough had been carried on in a satisfactory manner, and for the best interest of the burgesses, and he trusted the Mayor-elect at the con-, elusion of his term of office would be' able to express himself in similar terms, he had great pleasure in introducing his successor to the office "

Mr A. W. Eenall, having made the usual declaration, then took his seat, and having referred to the division of the Borough into wards, and his defeat as a candidate to represent the East Ward, said that he always considered it his duty to do his best for the Borough, notwithstanding lie had | been rejected. He intended during I his term of office to avoid personalities, and although roused bytne heat ] of debate, he would endeavor to conflict the business with proper decorum. He would not allude at present to his water scheme, but would, at the next meeting of the Council, endeavor to lay before them a full and comprehensive scheme of the proposed works, and he felt certain that the Council would co-operate with him in carrying it out. It was usual, at the installation of Mayor, to give a Royal or rather a Mayoral banquet, he was too poor for that, but he would promise them that if they were good boys, he would give them " something" before his term of office expired, only it must be strictly understood they must attend to the duties of the Council, and he thought that whether his term was long or short ho would have the pleasure of parting with them in the same manner as his predecessor. It was resolved that the next general meeting of the Council be held on Thursday, 29th ins|, The meeting then adjourned.
