Congress was opened to-day. The President's message was confined to tariff and financial questions. The message urges Congress to take immediate steps to reduce the present surplus, and suggests as the most most favorable method of doing so the reduction or abolition of the duties upou wool, and the imposts upon raw materials used in American manufacturing industries. Melbourne, December 7. The Legislative Assembly sat all last night, and only rose at 1 o'clock this afternoon. The subject of the debate was the Public Service Amendment Bill, which measure the Government were forced to abandon. Sydney, December 7. The Naval Defence Forces Bill passed its third reading in the Legislative Assembly to-day. WOOL SALES. Melbourne, December 7.
Messrs Goldsborough • and Co. (Limited) report having sold 5200 bales of wool during the past week. There was a large attendance at today's sale, and competition was very spirited, the market being somewhat firmer in tone, though no material advances in prices were made Superior greasy merino realised 12Jd; good ditto, lOd; crossbred, lOfd; superior lambs' wool, 12fd; pieces, 8f d per lb.
The New Zealand Loan aud Mercantile Agency Company have received the following cable message from their London office, dated 6th instant:— " Wool—The sales gain firmness as they progress. Frozen meat—Market quiet. Canterbury mutton is worth BJdperlb."
