Premier applied for permission to recommit clause 2 of the Representation Bill, which provided that the number of members shall be 70, including three Native members, The Premier intimated his willingness to

make the number 74, including four Native members, Sir George Grey moved that the number be 50,< In the course of a smart discussion that ensued, the Premier and Sir Julius Vogel had a smart passage-at-arms, Sir Julius Vogel accusing the Premier

of" arrogance and of trying to tame members into submission, while the Premier pointed out that the lion, gentleman had wasted nearly the whole afternoon in talking and obstructing the Bill. After a warm discussion the number of members was fixed at 74, and the Maori members made four instead of three.

EKETAIIUNA ROAD BOARD. An ordinary meeting of this Board was held at the sclioolliouse, Ekotalmna, on 3rd inst. Present: Messrs T. Bayliss (chairman), A, Anderson, 0, E, Beckman, and M. Nilson, Correspondence inwards was read from Property Tax Commissioner witli schedule for amendinst tlio Crown and Native land valuation roll; from Commissioner of Crown Lands approving of the Board's proposals re the spending of accrued thirds subject to obtaining the consent of two selectors, and agreeing to paying interest of loan for the Mangaone Yalley road out of accrued thirds, subject to the same conditions as those paid in the case of a loan proposed to be raised by the Alfredton Boad Board. Mr J, M. Davie applied to have a side cutting to enable liiui to «et timber in to build; request granted. Mr H. Schroman waited on the Board applying to have the bush felled on the line adjoining his section. This was left in the hands of Messrs Bayliss and Nilson, A lengthy discussion took place on the raising of a loan for works on the Mangaone Valley road, The question was adjourned for the consideration of a special nieeting of the Board to he held on the 9th inst,. The chairman reported a difficulty had arisen in obtaining metal for the contracts on the Alfredton road. The clerk was instructed to ask the County Council to supply a metal pit. It was decided to delay calling for tenders until the metal pit had been seemed. An account of £9, which the Board agreed to pay towards the cost of a bridge over the Makakahi into Parkville, was passed for payment. Messrs Bayliss and Nilson were appointed to sign cheques. It was reported Waterson's contract would bo completed in a week's time; the cheque to be signed a? soon ns the work is passed. The meeting tjjen adjourned.
