SCAB IN MARLBOROUGH.
Blenheim, December 2.
William Pollard, manager of several stations belonging to the Loan and M 3rcantile Agency Company, was charged to-day with having failed to inform tlie Sheep Inspector as to the existence of scab on the Tophouse and Manuha Island stations. He pleaded guilty, and in evidence admitted that he was aware of the existence of scab, but was in hopes of being able to stamp it out by dipping. When the. Inspector asked him if scab was on his run, he had fenced with the question. Mr Dods, visiting officer of the Loan Company,' and Mr Hannah, local manager, stated that the defendant was empowered'to spend what he thought proper for the eradication of scab. Ae never informed 1 the Company that scab did exist. Mr Bodgers who appeared for the department, said he would only press for a minimum penalty, but would lay a second information against the defendant for failing to inform the Inspector within twenty-four hours after lie becal'me aware that scab existed. If the full penalties were granted under this information, the fine would be brought up to £2OOO. Mr Allen, E.M., fiaed the defendant the minimum pemiMy of £SO, but said this wonld not effect his decision under any future information. The case has excited great interest here.
