The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1887. MR RENALL AT THE THEATRE ROYAL.

We hardly knew Mr Renall at the Kurupuni Hall on Saturday evening. He was so mild in his demeanour, so moderate in his language, so chaste in his epithets, that we felt that we had not the genuine article before us, or that, like Rip van Winkle, he had been to sleep for a considerable period, and suddenly discovered himself to be very much aged. Last night at the Theatre Royal however, Mr Renall was himself again, there was no mistake about him this time. He had regained his lost youth, and re-assumed his pristine vigor. When lie went for Councillor Gapper and smote him hip and thigh, when he danced upon his grave and at odd intervals offered to lay ten pound wagers with him, we had"Alfred" back again as we knew him ten and twenty years ago. The speech of Mr Renall last evening virtually settles the Mayoral election, Its omissions plainly indicate that he knows and cares little about the presentposition of municipal questions. We must wait for Mr VV. Lowes' meeting this evening _ for a review of the position of affairs and possibly a direction as to the best way out of the existing tangle, We thank Mr Renall heartily for contesting the Mayoral seat because he has roused the public to take some little interest in a very important election, and we only regret that while he was interesting himself on this subject he did not make some investigation of the present state of municipal affairs. As long as Mr Renall confines himself to speech making he is safe. He is only dangerous when he goes into action, and divides the borough, as he did some two years ago, by a fluke, into absurd quarters, or, as he now threatens, to turn water on and off through the Masterton streets at his own royal will and pleasure.
