WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNTY.
A meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council was held on Saturday last, Present: —Crs W. Booth, H. Bunny, H.R. Bunny, A. Matthews, •{£ 0, Phillips, H. Braithwaite, W. 0. $ Buchanan, J. Martin and W. Wratten. Or Phillips moved that Cr H. Bunny be elected Chairman, and Cr Booth seconded the motion, which was . carried, . ' , •. Cr H, Bunny was also eleotedA, member of the United Charitable AidP " Board, Crs H. Bunny, Booth,. Buchanan and Braithwaite were , elected members of, the Wairarapa Hospital Board. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
Cr Buchanan, in referring to the services of Mr W. Bootli. as Chairman to the Council, .moved that • ' a vote of thanks be passed to him. Cr Braithwaite seconded the motion. Cr Phillips opposed it on the ground that Cr Booth opposed the motion that the whole of the Wairarapa be one County. The resolution for a vote of thanks was then carried by 8 to 1. .<* The Chairman said he very muoh % regretted that any member of the Council should have opposed the motion for a vote of thanks to the late Chairman, as he could fully bear out the facts that he had very efficiently performed his duties. Cr Booth briefly returned thanks tiljw the Council.
It was resolved that the amount charged to the Oyster Shell Creek be added to the general fund, and that £174 18s lOd be allocated to the Featherston Road Board. Correspondence was read as follows: From the North County Council, re the co-operation of the Council, m ' reference to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Cr Buchanan stated that there was a Bill already before Parliament to amend the Act. From Waitatei County re acquiring titles to roads, and asking that this Council join with them in trying to get the law on the same amended. Referred to the Public Works to report thereon. From the late County Council, re some provision for the alteration of the present Counties Aot.—No action taken, From the Public Works department re some monies advanced to ' the County. .Z. The Public Works Committee's re* H port was read and adopted. The engineer reported favorably on all the works in course of progress in the County, and asked that Mr JRolston be allowed some extension of time to finish his contract. He also reported that the Pahaua road was far enough advanced to allow drays to haul wool over it. Mr King was instructed to have the Hurunuioraugi bridge repaired. Org Buchanan, H. R. Bunny, J. Martin, and W. Wratten were appointed a public works committee. The question of travelling allowances to councillors was raised, when Cr Booth moved and Cr H. R. Bunny seconded, that the travelling expenses be us beforo. An amendment was moved by Cr Phillips, seconded by Cr Matthews, that the travelling allowance be suspended. The motion and amendment having been put, the voting was equal, and the chairman jk gave his casting vote in favor of the * motion.
It was resolved that a statement of the Council's receipts and expenditure be prepared, and that the Council stand adjourned till the second Saturday in March, 1888. Several accounts were passed for payment and the meeting terminated. ME RENALL'S PETITION. The following is a copy of the petition that Mr Renall intends forwarding to the House of Representatives if Mr George Beetliam, M.H.R. does not abandon the new Town Lands Trust Bill as requested, until it has been approvedby the people of Masterton To the Hon. the Speaker and members of the House of Representatives in Parliament assembled.
t The humble petition of the under' signed inhabitants of Masterton res* pectfully sheweth That a Bill called the Masterton Town Lands Management Act, and i intended to amend the Masterton and Greytown Town Lands Management Act has been submitted to your honorable House, That the said Bill deals with valuable Trust properties conferred on the people of Masterton by the original founders over thirty years ago. That the conditions on which these town acres, which ara annually increasing in value have been settled on the people, aid the objects to which the revenues are to be applied, are fully set forth in the Act of 1871, and the existing amended Act. That the new Aot submitted to your honorable House introduces a number of dangerous powers and innovations and has for its design the diversion of the revenue of the Trust from the object for which it was created—education and purposes of public utility. That although the new Act is the production and has the assent of the members of the Town Lands Trust, it has not been submitted to the people for their consideration and approval. Your petitioners therefore pray that you will protect the rights of thepeople , of Masterton in their Trust property by preventing this Act being proceeded ' with until it has been properly sub. mitted to the owners at a public meet* ing,|and their approval of its provieiona has been obtained.
