YOUTHFUL CRIMINALS.
. Auckland, November 24. . Two-lads named Adcock and Eade, who.were sentenced recently by Mr Badto, R.M,, to seven days' fniprSfiinent, and a flogging, were released from Mount Eden Gaol today, by order of the Minister of Justice after being incarcerated for three . days, and undergoing the flagellation .ordered. The boys had been found guilty of stealing fruit from an orchard, but the sentence imposed excited much public discussion, and the representations made to; the Minister of Justice resulted in their release The Rev. J. S. 11 ill had an interview with a reporter, and stated that the method in vogue here of dealing with youths of the criminal or larrikin class was a very bad one. He favored the establishment of a reformat, to which these lads should be committed, so that they should not be connected with the hardened criminal class. ' Mr Hill has considerable knowledge .of the working ..of gaols, and says the general tendency and effect of our gaol system," is to manu-1 faoturej and not reform, criminals.
