BLACK HILL ROAD.
[to the .editor.] .'•■.'' ' Sir,—The time has newly : expired when the Castlepoint ratepayers are to decide whether they will suffer "them-", _'[ selves to be further taxedffbr a road '' they do not require at preseuij arid" .. although the County Chairman? has sent to each ratepayer the amount of additional tax he will be called'upon ' to pay, will he undertake to ear that' the amount asked for will finish-the;.',' work, or does he imagine that £BO will cover contingencies in works estimated to cost over,.£3ooo. May we not safely say: that it will require an additional thousand to finish the works in. a satisfactory manner. Let us only look at the cost of the Mungapakeha road and the blunders made, and wo are now asked by Messrs Mackay., arid Hawkins to renounce a part of it that *J is bridged and formed, and go in for new road, I would like to ask those . gentlemen how much they will have to pay in rates supposing the road. is made, There is an old adage, Mr Editor, which says it is easy to bb generous with other peoples money, and' why are they so auxious#saddle us with this additional tax. ; It js to ..' ha hoped that polling day will- : prove to these gentlemen that we not, prepared to throw thousands of pounds away and saddle ourselves for 26 years with an additional tax for,; a road we . do not require, and I.think I may say we.''have sufficient ratepayers in the district who are thoroughly' alive to "'" the requirement of tbe'distriot without going outside for advice. Let ■ those ' ratepayers,. Mr-Editor,' who want the """ said road pay for it; arid not l force a , tax upon those who rightly consider it is not required. It seems to me, Mr Editor, thai no matter how depressed the ti'iies this borrowing mania raußt go on. Did it ever occur to those gmitleiiiun that the..small settler has to look at every pound he gets twice A before be parts witlrit? Anil, Sir, tin's' continual borrowing and taxation, \ what does it mean j,ut bankruptcy.., Liit rliH ratepayers compare. County'' South with our rates, mid I would suggest to them that we cull a'meeting nil over the country to suspend the County, and then sue if it is not pt». ' «ible to do away wirb some of the county rates, as J believe it take's more than one to pay working expenses. I remain, Sir, if the poll is carried, A YICTIH.
