Eight bodies have been recovered from the wreck, The latest accounts give the number of saved at 20, whilst 89 are said to have been drowned. [The Cheviot was an iron screw steamer of 120 horse power, her registered tonnage being 1226 gross, i and 704 net. Her length was 230 ft ;. 2in, breadth 82ft in, and depth 17ft sin. She was built iu 1870.]

Mr Gladstone, speaking on the Irish question at tlio Nottingham Liberal Conference, declined, to conform to the appeal made by Mr Chamberlain at Belfast for a clear exposition of his Mr Gladstone's plans tor Ulster, or to commit himself to an Irish Bill, but declared lib would not impede a settlement of the question, by making objections to matters of detail.

Mr Gosehen, in a speech at Bradford, referring to the Irish question, said the difficulties which had occurred had not discouraged the Government. It was true that midnight secret meetings were still held, but the action of the Government had had the effect of decreasing the practice of boycotting, and the delivery of spooches whioh formerly acted as an incitement to crime.

At the Liberal Conference at Nottingham, Mr. Gladstone explained the concessions which bo believed ■would bo granted to Ireland. He advocated the establishment of an Irish Parliament, the statues passed by which, would be subject "to tho control of the Imperial Parliament.
