Peatherstnn is not tho only place in tho Wairarapa that suffers from the effects of high winds, and, judging from ,the following item in yesterday's Standard, Groytown stands well to wrest tho laurels from the Southern township;— " On Thursday night about eight o'clock, the fireball tower at Greyhmn, which had just been made 25ft hiirher, came down with a crash before the fury of the westerly wind then blowing. It will be remembered that at tho last meeting of the Borough Council this matter was discussed, and Councilloiß Varnham, Bright, and Cameron were for strengthening the tower, Crs Ingley, Cotter, and Smith voted against it, and the Mayor, anxious to save expense, gave his casting; vote with the latter gentlemen, The wisdom of their action iB now manifest. The whole cf the tower w a wreck., but fortunately the now bell has not been injured. Just as the structure was tailing over, Fireman Humphries was coming toward's it from the engine shed, and but for providentially having noticed it in time a very sad disaster miphfc have occurred. The captain of the Brigade, .Mr Maguire, had just tested the vibration when to his sur; riso he saw the tower gently topple over. In the fall of tho tower two wind, ws ol the Town Hall n-ere broken." A correspondent in the 'saine paper writes in this strain on the subject;—"'lt now measures its length in ruins by the side of the Town Hall, and it is a great pity,' to nly mind, that some of our foolish councillors were not. buried beneath it. Had it not been for lack of a little common sense, the tower would have been standing now." .
