Advices received from Merv state •that -AyoubKhan is. organising a general rising of natives at Herat and Afghan Turkestan. '! M. Fleurens,' the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, has suggested to the Spanish Government that Morocco should be placed under , the joint control of France and Spain. Spain is indisposed to accept the suggestion. The Sultan fearing that Germany has promised to aid Italy in acquiring possession of Tripoli, has sent strong reinforcements to the latter district. Incessant attacks have ~been made on M. Wilson, in the hope of compelling his father-in-law, President Grevy to resign.
Dr McKenzie is of opinion that thel-e is nothing to justify alarm at tho condition of the Crown Prince of Germany.
THE UNEMPLOYED IN LONDON.
London, October 18.
A monstor demonstration by the unemployed took place yesterday in Trafalgar Square, it' being estimated that over 4000 men were present. A deputation to the Lord Mayor was appointed, which proceeded to the Mansion House. On arrival there, the deputation was received by the Alderman in attendance, who, in response to tho demand made for work for the unemployed, referred th'em to the workhouse authorities. On tho deputation returning to Trafalgar Square and announcing the rosult of the intorviow, a number of angry speeches wore mado by tho leaders of the demonstration. The mob subsequently attempted to march in tlio direction of the city, but the police, who had been mustered in full strength, barred its progress, and forcibly dispersed the crowd. Several constables and civilians sustained injuries iii the collision, and 20 persons wore arrested for obstructing tho polioo. Some of the unemployed who were advised to march to Buckingham ; Palace demanding work plundered the Shops and Hotels en route.' AUSTRALIAN. Sydney, October 38. Tho testimonial to Sir Henry Parkes is meeting with hearty support in every direction. The weather to-day is excessively hot. Hobart, Ootober 18. No further cases of small pox have been reported, and the patients in the smallpox hospital are progressing favorably. Sydney, October 19. Sir Henry Parkes has resigned his seat in the Legislative Assembly as member for St Leonards; but proceeds to seek re-election for that constituency for which he will probably bo returned unopposed. Sir Henry will retain his position in the Government pending the result of the election. FIKE AT PATEA. (Press Association.) Patea, October 20. Alton's (late of Woodville) hotel was burnt to the ground last night. Nothing was saved. The occupants only managed to escape in their night clothes. The insurance was £220 on the buildings, in the Standard, the stock and furniture £OOO in tho Norwich and Union offices.
