At Mr Robertson's meeting of Wellington East electors on Monday evening one lapsus Knjiice on the part of tho candidate evoked a tremendous outburst of laughter, and kept the audience in a simmer of merriment for several minutes says a Wellington paper. Mr Robertson was reading a letter from a villago settler, whom lie interpreted as saying—" At the present time 1 am grazing eight milk bullocks on 10£ acres." As soon as tho shrieks of laughter had sufficiently subsided, Mr Robertson explained that he had meant to saymill bullocks—sawmill bullocks, you know." The "bull" was not easily forgotten, and later on, as the candidate paused to refresh himself from the contents of the water-bottle, one of audience roared out " Is that some of the milk from those bullocks ?" Some of tho questions propounded at the conclusion of the address wero of the most absurd oharacter. One of them which was signed by " Jamoß Ferguson," rah—Are you in favor of bringing in a Bill to make saveloys without skins? The Chairman, amidst roars of laughter, declared that it was not necessary to answer the query, , as tho person who wroto it was " not a man, ibut an ignorant ass," It is impossible to enumerate all tho novelties now on view, but wo would respectfully solioit an early visit of inspection, when it will bo found that for first-class seleotion, immense variety, and actual wholesale prices, thero is no place superior, i( equal, to the Wholesale Family Drapery Warehouse, To Aro Houbo, Wellington.—Advt. [Opinions of the Press.J
Mr Hogg is not a desirable type of representative, or. likely to prove of much real uso if he should get .into Parliament.— Evening Post,August 31, •
Mr Hawkins hag no chance of uuecesi, and
his retirement in favor of Mr Eecthani, -would! be the moat practical proof ho could give of thesincority of the political faith he possesses,— Evening Post, August 31, ' . IN commenting some weeks ago on certain'• passages in Mr Hawkins'speech to the' Wait . arapa electors, we observed i,with great regret that a gentleman who evidently possesses! uncommon political qualifications, appeared, nevertheless, jto be unfitted for public life by a want of self-control, and a most unfortunate tendency to deal in personalities, We were equally astonished to read in tho Wairabapa Daily a few days ago, a letter from Mr Hawkins which not only outrages all tho proprieties •of political/warfare, but so far exceeds all rational bounds as to revive and confirm our' opinion that Mr Hawkinß is wholly unfitted by temperament for public life, We. neVer read a' niore violent or unbecoming letter,—Evening Press, September 3.
We learn that Mr Beetham's chances for the Mastorton electorate are improving daily, We' congratulate tho electors of that district upoli. the fact, Mr Beetham being a gentleman of whom any constituency might he proud.' His only opponent is a gentlemen of " wonderful mediocrity" who seems to imagine that the lack of all that would malto a good roprescntfttivo is atoned for by supporting the Government.— Hawkes Bay Herald, September 9,
Few constituencies aro as fortunate as tlioy are hi having the opportunity of getting jfor tbeir l'cprosontatiyo (Mr Beetham) who renders hijhpublio sorvice to tho colony, and is at the, same time unwearying in his efforts to further all the legitimate interests of his djs-triot-.—Evening; Pross September 10.
,No member of the last four parliaments was more thoroughly or univoreally respected than Mr Beetham. His highly personal character and solid ability have justly gained for him a far suporior position in the estimation of all who know him to any that can be won by ■ tho mere apai'klo of frothy oratory or by an aptitude for trioky strategy. His name has more than once been mentioned as a coming Minister, and there is no doubt that but for hi 3 repuguaucc to push himself forward ho would long ore this nave held a portfolio. His claim to bo a mem- , bor of any. new Ministry that may bo formed by tho present opposition party cannot, with propriety, be longer ignored, for few men have been so substantially useful to their party as ho has been,—New Zealand Timos September 20th,
