- (To the Editor.) Afc- Sin.—l have heard that it has been % stated by some of Mr Hogg's supporters that I am disqualified for a seat in the legislature for assisting some men who would havo been otherwise disqualified, to get their names on. the electoral roll, TJndoudtedly I did assist fivo men to gain their electoral jdwileges, which, by an accident, they wwd havo lost, had not I and Mr Crewe interviewed the Registration Officer. I challenge the fullest enquiry into the question. I merely did my duty. I am, &c., George Beetiiam, Mr 0. Watson, tho owner of the Clydesdale stallion Avon, intends giving a prize to be competed for at next year's pastoral show, for the best mare with foal at foot by liis horse.

An incident occurred in Masterton on . Saturday evening last, which point 3 out a new danger from wax- vestas, and may in a measure account for some, of tho mysterious fires that havo broken out in " different parts of tho oolony. As Mr Hr the Firo Engine keepor, was sjßwig near tho Post Office, a-box of vestas in his overcoat pocket, suddenly exploded, and in turning them out he burned his' hand in several places. As there was nothing besides the matches in the pocket, and he had nytcomo into contact with anything that would causo the'explosion. theinferenco is that tho matches; which he had just brought from •• home, ; were slightly damp, and the : warmth of his body caused Bpoutaneous combustion;, This,was borne out by the
feet that they did not break into a flame, burned liko damp phospl ioru».
