Tho following resolutions wore passed: That having carefully considered the financial position of the Borou/h, the Committee find that tho Gas-works, street lighting, and other changes in statement marked "I)'' will entail an expenditure of £6OO, to meet this two couises are open - First to suspend all new works bo as to bring the expenditure wit.rin the ordinary income, or, second, to strike separate rates for street lighting and..Charitable Aid.

That a special rate must be struck to provide the interest oil tho Gas Loan, That as the maintenance of tho Gas Works during the ensuing six months will be a serious item, the question of reduction of the expenditure on this account be remitted to the Gas Commit* tee,

That application be made to the Insuranco Companies for a grant in aid of the Steam Fire Engine, pointing out the immense advantages arising from this means of protecting and saving property from destruction by fire. That an application be made to tho lown Landß Trust for a grant to meet the yearly payment of tho Steam Fire Engine, the object 'being one of public utility, and tl\e Trust having valuable blocks of buildings to protect. That in the event of. the Insurance Companies and the Trustees agreeing to the requests, it will obviate striking a rate for these objects,

• The Comraitte oaunofc ascertain yet whether thore will be any subsidy on the rates for the current year, but should there be one, a rate for charitable aid purposes need not be struok, The Committe cannot recommend the Council to incur any expense for street watering during the ensuing summer, but the cart having been procured, the Committee advise that those occupiers requiring street watering, may have the work done on payment of the cost. That in order to meet the necessary payments during October, and ! keep_ tho overdraft within the legal limit, it is necessary that the balance of tho first iiu stalment of rates be collected aod recovered forthwith. That the Council Ipe. recommended to 'strike a speoial rate to provide the October interest on the gas loan. That the expenditure in the wards be requested by the receipts therein.
