ENGINEER'S REPORT.
The following report from Mr C. Ej ISremrie'r whs read at tbo meeting M the North Wairarupa County Council on Tuesday last:—Masterton Riding Te Ore Ore to Bideford Road,-In the matter of the maintenance of this line tor the remainder of the current year, I have to suggest that the Council authorize me to engage two or three extra men for a short period, with' whose assistance I propose to. put the northern section of the road in thor* migh order, by removing the sligfitand iriiiiinmg; in the metal throughout. The period for which authority was granted-to' employ the extra surface men has now expired, and it is essential that' this pot (ion of the road should V'put in an efficient state of repair, before throwing the burden ot i maintaining the lull length on our one permanent man. The adoption of this proposal Will leave the permanent man free to deal with the busk' section of the road during the next month, by the end of which, if the weather holds iip-,-uiß ; services-will be required to re-model .; the unoietalled . portions towards Mastertoh,'.,;.
Waingawato Camp - Road.—During •thepfist'moritb' extra- men" have been employed iVi surface repairs/on the si'ctioriofihiß line immediately to-the .Worth ,6f>/Mai»terton. The metal required.for' the purpose lias.been removed- from the steep cutting •what is genially known as Jwm'a terrace. • In the performance of the ;work, the'jjongitudiual section has been loweredJ'otii a gradient of linll to lin 18, whicbhaa materally added to : tbßßafety audvutility of this portion of:the:road. v ',;:;l would ask that the give .toe authority to make the necjwaty'Buriejrof a diviation to avoid a . thtey will negoci'ate with the laud owner .Mr H.jnniKaV.of Wellington with', a ; view ft acquiring the necessary land for the phrpose. On the South ' Jiuaricevillg Road Sir Stevens is making'fair, with the con. atruction .of the small bridge giving access .to Messrs Fabian Bros, propertjj But for unfavorable weather,, the worS would have been well advanced by now and under existing circumstances it is probable it will be finished in the iWifiofa fortnight. Cashpoint Riding - Masterton to Waimata Road. .Contract' tfp* 28 Metal contract at Pine Hill bajwen completed in a satisfactory matmef"by Air J. Hailrgau. In connection with the load deviation at this point I propose, during the current month, if the ••eatber proves favorable, to commence • lie rumoviil of the heavier slips so as in enable me to throw the line open to public traffic early in the month of October. The' metal spreading I i i'ci'oiiiiiicu'd should be allowed to stand over until towards the end of November or beguiling of December, in order that the foundation may become per* fi'C.tly dry and solid. Mr Jepson's contract :'>o 28 (removal ami addition to roadman's'cottage has been fulfilled in ii creditable manner, and the roadmani mid hb family are now in nccupati& of the premises. Mr H. Rellis is making slow progress with the erection of the fence enclosing the.reserve.' This is partly due' to unfavorable weather, thungh principally to a constituted inertness on his part, upon which the peiial clauses of specifications' have .no effect. The work I hope, may hMn* isbed in the course of ten days. !$T The repair*, to •■ the Tin.ui bridge aro 'completed. The bridge was re-opened to traffic about' the 18th of last month. Mr Anderson's progress on contract No. .27. (stone breaking, on the Castlepoint section of the road) has been materially retarded by the wet weather. This has prevented his sledging the stone from the quarry to the site where it has to bo broken to the guag<j.required for road metal. 'J|e anticipates, under favorable circumstances, to complete the work in .two-weeks' time. '■ Alfredton Ejding.-iEketahnna to Tinui. road (Bketahuna to Tiraumea man on .this line las beer) employed during the pari* month in removing'dips'and repairing! ;tha road slirfac'e on tbo Alfredton end ;bt the-litije,-' ', ,Opakii to ■Manawa'ttt*, road.—The. maintenance expenditure on this road forche'past mouth has Keen consider* ■ably above the average. ,This is owing to the heavy land slips'and falls df timber which haveUaken place jffi several sections, necessitating the' elr V ployment of additional labor to assist the peimaneht men to keep the line, open. With refeience to the reputed; encroachment of the Wellington Special Settlement Survey upon the Council's road reserve, I have communicated with the Chief Surveyor, and desire now to place the result' of my correspondence on the matter before the Council.
