Tho ordinary monthly mooting of tho Masterton Sohool Cotmuittoe will be held in the Oddfellows Hall, Perry-street, tomorrow evening, •Tenders are invited for cartage to and fromLangdale Station for the year commencing l?th October. Particulars can be obtained at the Daily Office. Tlie Deputy Assignee advertises a meeting of Creditors in the Bankrupt Batata of. Benjamin Budden, to bo held at the Old Courthouse, Masterton, on Monday-.next, 19th inst., to considor offers received for the property at Mangamahoe. The Fernridgo School, Upper Plain, though not one of the largest, is,' thanks to an energetio Committee, liberal Trust donationß, ; and a painstaking head teacher, one of the best appointed and most'successful schools in. this .district, We had the pleasure of payiug a visit to this school' during the past week, and were courteously shown over the institution by the Chairman—Mr R. D. liagg—who takes a great interest in its affairs. There is a capital Library, containing about 400 volumes, appliances for Bcienjtifio teaohing, and model drawing, besides a-liberal collection of maps, object cards, ahd.blackboards, _ In the old schoolroom tho desks and fittings are of the orthodox style, but the new room has the dual desks with all the latest improvements, for the use of the Upper Standards. The eldest boys are'provided with arms and accoutrements, for drill purposes, and have become very efficient in their movements under the able tuition of Mr J. Williams, of Masterton, who has taken great pains with his young corp. The Rummer and wet weather sheds are provided with seats, and are so situated, as to be sheltered fronvthe prevailing wind, The usual Bwings, and necessary appliances for out-door enjoyment have boon furnished, the ground; around the former being paved with wooden blocks, bo that the. children can enjoy themselves during the winter months, without the' usual accompaniment-mud.

Messrs Lowes and lorns report holding' a clearing sale of stuck, farm implements, furniture, &c, at Mr Champeney'B farm, Carterton, yestorday, when all lines were sold at very good rates, tho bidding throughout being very spirited. The following are the prices obtained :—Heavy fat sheep, lis Gd ; medium, 9s <ld ; store wethers, 8s 6d; small, 7s 9d; hoggots, 5s lOd; ewo, and lambs, 5s 9d; small cattlo, 35s Gd ; horses, £5 to £7; cart and harness, £2O. Saddlery, farm tools, household furniture, and sundries, all sold fairly, and concluded a brisk sale.
Mr C. A, Pownall, for some time past Manager to a large firm of solicitors, in Wellington, has commenced practice as a barrister and solicitor in Masterton.'" Mr Pownall comes accredited with a number of testimonials from influential' Wellington citizens. As a voucher for his ability we quote an extract from tho Evening Poßt of tho 25th Novombur, 1886 :~"Mr Charles Pownall was on Tuesday admitted a solicitor, &c. Tho career of this young gentleman has so far been a brilliant, one. Ab a pupil at the Thorndon School, ho carried off the first Provincial Scholarship of £SO per annum for three years to the Wellington College, where he also took numerous honors. Ho afterwards passed the Cambridge University Examination, and matriculated in the JNow Zealand University, in addition to passing both Senior and Junior Civil Service Examinations at tho same timo. Serving his articlos with Messrs Moorhouse, Edwards and Cullen, he successfully passod all the legal examinations, and as wo have said, was finally admitted to the Bar without having experienced a single check iu any of the numerous tests to "which ho has been subjected. Mr Pownall's oxample Bhould j[provo an incentive. to Wellington youths. Hia fcholastie career has been a series of triumphs, and wo have no doubt he will distinguish himself in tho profession he has adopted, Ho is the son of Mr O. J. Pownall, the well-known scrivener and financial agent." As will be seen in our advertising columns Mr Pownall represents city capitalists, and has alargoamount of money to placo at the lowest ratos of interest that have provailod for some considerable time,
