The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1887. MR HOGG'S LIBERALISM.
Ocb local contemporary in hie last issue sheds a manly tear over the want of appreciation displayed towards Mr Hawkins in certain quarters 1 and recommends those electors who will not support IkSfr Hogg to give the 'object of-his solicitude a preference over, Mrßeeth'&m. It is true that pur contemporary, does not go so 'ftr as to give Mr Hawkins any of„Mr. Hogg 1 ? votes/but he is evidently prepared to hand him over a couple of hundred of Mr Beetharhs votes..... We have taken the trouble:, to figure out what'would be the practical outcome of our loiial contemporary's advice to .the electors if they should take his •' view of the situation, ana 1 accept hie ' guidance. We will assume that as matters now stand the several chances of the respective candidates i are. as. follows ;~ Beetbam ... ... 850 Hogg..." ... .:> 700 ' Hawkins ... ...V 800 , This is not perhaps an exact estimate ': of the chances but it is a tolerably fair, one which will serve to illustrate j the extraordinary generosity of our j local contemporary. Now assuming i that a couple. of hundred electors j accept kio most disinterested guidance
preferred, and transfer their Bupport from Mr Bee'tham. tp Mr Hawking the result would be one to which our local contemporary might possibly be resigned whatever violence it might impose on,the benevolent instincts which have prompted him to succour ■ Mr Hawkins. The poll as amended by pur cpntempprary would stand as follows :-r. Hogg... • 70Q . • Beetham •-..-.■ ... 660..' Hawkins ■... ... 560 ; Ho doubt; the electors, of this , district will"-, apprediate at. its M value>the. guidance tendered in such an unselfish spirit. If-we might venturi to gite one word of advice to our local contemporary, it would be .not to show his cards top plainly to telectprs,'; He is, playing his hand; skilfully enough, though it was, perhapg, foplish : of him to try and score again- off the .paltry old Sutton . trick, but when he sobs over the sorrows of Mother oandidate he ■ slightly overaofs. the part he is playing and suggests the idea of a comedy in which the part of "the Artful Dodger'! is somewhat.olumsily portrayed., Weil may he write of "Mr Hogg and liberalism' 1 -such a clever Mr Hogg and such;a* wonderful liberalism! The our local contemporary is bright and beautiful, but for sweetness and light how muoh more b'rilliant is the liberalism of MrHogg-a liberalism #ich converts Mr Hogg's minority •into ;,a-'majority by putting Mr : Hawkins:u'p to steal Mr Beetham's votes.;. Our local contemporary :<has -playeol cautiously but surely Ills trump card, arid that trump card is '.{.Mr Hawkins.'' We fear he has somewhat underrated 1 the•''• intelligence pil ..the electors, if he really expects them to fall into the pit whioh he has dug for. them—if he really thinks that, say just for the sake, cf " Mr Hogg and liberalism," the party with whioh we have the ploasure to be associated, will split itself up into two equal divisions and allow Mr Hogg and his minority and to march up- the centre to,the tune of "See the conquering hero oomes." It is of. course not Mr Hogg'B fault that he oanuot beat Mr Beetham on level terms by fair play, and_ our_ local contemporary is quite justified if he can manage it to split up the votes of those who are opposed to him, and hand over the representation of the district to the unselfish minority which constitutes bis own, following. "Oyiof 600,000 of a population, how many own land?" asks.our local contemporary,' and hi» answor Ib', 80,888. Thin looks bad. 80,686 ia a poor proportion to 600,000! We mußt, however, bear in Bind that the* 600,000 includes, women and children,; He doos not expeot babies hurras to hold broad acres, does ho ? If he will allow for women and children the' comparison will stand as follows; Out of a population'of. 100,000 (adult males) 80,686 own land (five acres and upwards). Thia is not no bad a proportion ! Our .contemporary's' statement is a fair one if 100,000 is substituted for his 600,000. The alteration of ono figuro'does it. •:'*' • ■: , ■'' - -.
THBresult 50 far as it is known of the Eastern Maori Dietricfc Election is a slap in the face for the Hon. Mr Ballancs, The natives are evidently : siok of the mischoivous native legißlttion of the present .'Ministry.
