The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 1887. THE PROPOSED MASTERTON DAIRY FACTORY.
On Saturday last the Masterton' Farmer's Olub appointed a Committee, to obtaig all neoeSßary information for starting & local dairy faotory. This is tho first practical step which has been taken in this borough to ; , initiate, a. very deßirable. Tun.dprtakinf, : Some time ago we ascertained from the farmers round Masterton that if a ..factory .were established they would guarantee an ample supply of milk, but at that date Mr Caselberg, the prinoipal Wairarapa dealer in produce,, informed us thai the prioo .of butter was tlieii too high to -make such an enterprise profitable, and that it would be better to wait for. bad times to start it. We deferred to Mr Caselberg's opinion, and now that tho bad times are.upoa us we are glad to see him coming to -the .'front-to' carry out the project which was then postponed, It is usually dnring periods of depression that new industries and fresh enterprise's lmvo'tlieir birth, and the present is undoubtedly an opportune time for starting a Mastertou factory. It is gratifying to know'that there is a praotically unlimited market in London for dairy produce and that the prices obtainable promise to be satisfactory. r Individual farmers cannot, avail themselves of the London market because for a large permanentexport trade a high uniform quality, say of butter, is indispensable, and this, standard quality could oniy be maintained by a thoroughly equipped factory. It may be noticed that since
factories. commenced cheese making in the Wairarapa we have had uniform, quality of excellent grades and that prior to their establishment we had varying qualities in which low and worthless grades preponderated. No doubt the Committee will carefully consider in wlmt scale a company should be formed to manufacture butter and cheese for export. Probably it might ho convenient to form ..a company -with a large 'nominal eapital of £IO,OOO, issuing.in the first instatice sufficient shares only, to start a central factory in the Borough- of-.Master,ton.,-This could'be' Mowed' tip ,by' further issues of shares as: might be required from time to time to enable outlying districts to obtain, local branches, ■ Even, if for a time, there were only a central factory in'Masterton, the bush districts could participate indirectly in the benefit? it would confer, as they Would be able to breed cows for the farmers in its immediate neighborhood, or to provide grazing accommodation at certain seasons of the year when feed might be soarce in the home district. The proposal is a local industry of the right sort, one that can be initiated without having recourse to that Juggernaut proteotion, and one therefore.that is from.-. eVery point of view a legitimate enterprise. A strong oompanv established to run a number of dairy factories in Wairarapa North is about, the' best speculatioiVthat we can go in for. •If we had to choose between £20,000 being spent in the Masterton distriot on a woollen factory, and £IO,OOO on a butter and cheese factory we would seloct the latter without a moment's hesitation.
