DEATH OF A VETERAN.
Inveeoargill, August 29. T. H. Escott, who received internal injuries through {falling over the face of a claim at Orepuki, died in Riverton Hospital yesterday. Deceased was. an old army m% and had seen service' at the Gape under Sir George 'Whitmore.

Numerous complaints • were -'made some time ago of sly grog selling -at Whangar'ei, aud other' settlements north of Auckland, and it was said that Inspector McGoverh's appointment w»s, in a measure, due to these reports, Recently Detective McGrath was brought up from the Wairarapa, as being less known than Auokland detectives, and he his been working in ■the Waipa district as a disguised gum digger. As a .result of his observation a quantity of spirituous -liquor was seized at the premieos of H. N, Simpson, who was subsequently charged at. the Resident Magistrate's' Court, Whangarei, with selling liquor to the detective, and was fined £2O and SI 4s costs.

STRUCK OIL, ■ Christchurch, August 27. The half-yearly meeting of the Southern Orosß Petroleum Company was held last night. The Chairman (Mr $ W, Williams), vbo v lias just' re,turned from the works, : reported , a good stock of oil in the pipe. A sample of the South Pacific Company's oil was shown at the meeting, and was considered very encouraging.
