FIRE IN AUCKLAND.

Auckland, August 25. A great fire oocurred at Eden Ter--raco this corning, causing, a loss of over £6OOO. Ik broke out at 12.80 in a small house oconpied- by a family named Flewellyn, near the ridiug sohool.and fanned by a south-east galo extended across the street anddestroyed SapdaU'B two storey block, Hill's large two storey block following.. The fire next ■■spread to the adjoining aidestreets, and before it was oheoked twenty dwellings and six shops, were burned • down. The flames raged. -fiercely for over, two hours, and swept an area of four acres square, on whioh wooden buildings were closely built. The insurances, so far as ascertained, are—Hill's block, £IBOO in the Union; Hill's ohemist ..stock, £BOO in the Eoyal, furniture £BO in the South' British; Patterson's cottages, i 550, divided between the Eoyal, New Zea-. and and South British. ■ Most of the furniture was uninsured. The machinery at the riding sohool was insured for 1170 in tho Norwich Union. There was no water supply in the district. ' The salvage corps and a detachment from H.M.S. Opal did good service in chocking the fire. Two shops in Hill's block were unoccupied. Three attempts have been made to oause incendiary fires in that block on pravidue occasions A movement was on foot to have a water supply for the district A loan was authorised for tho purpose some time ago.
