The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY AUGUST 20, 1887. MR HORACE BAKER.

We published yesterday a report of Mr Horace Baker'sjmeeting at Eketahuna. Supporting Mr Baker as'wo do mainly on the ground that he is an opponent of the present Ministry, it is Bom'o satisfaction for us to find from, inquiries we have niade in tho Bush districts, that he is making a very favorable impression upon our Alfredton ' and Eketahuna friends. Mr Horace Baker' is a' straightforward, : weU-informed ■ colonist who obtains popularity, wherever ho goes by the sterling and manly qualities he displays. 'Even a political opponent like 'MrMcCardle goes out of his way to express his admiration for Mr Baker, and his contempt for that very remarkable radical mushroom Mr W. C.; Smith. Monotonous as candidates addresses are becoming, our readers cannot help finding matter of .considerable interest in Mr Baker's address. He takes up one or two subjects and handjos' them thoroughly, .In all the 'candidates' speeches throughout the Colony' that 'have -come under our notice, V: we have.not found any expression of opinion on the great question of retrenchment equal to the extremely able an intelligent utterances , of 'Mr ,Baker. "On .tins question alone he deserves the thanks of the community. We hope ill a -few . weeks timo to see him sitting side by side, with Messrs ■Beetbam and Buchanan in the House of Representatives. ', The, Wairarapa then will have in', the Assembly a trio of members, of whom any ■ district in the colony might te proud. Wo shall hardly feel sati jTied with the result of the present flection.if the three B.'s whom we support are riot:-returned. Tho election of two I out of the three may be deemed a certainty, and we trust our frierids in the Alfredton and Eketahuna distriota will make tho third equally safe. We . , regret that we cannot accord support to our old friend Mr : McCardle, in the Woodvilie election. He is a political opponent, who. at least possesses our esteem, but we fear that he has not imFOved hir. chances of a seat .by transferring His Candidature from Masterton to Woodvilie; The Woodvilie election lies, as.far as we can judge, between Mr ,W. C. Smithy and Mr Baker; Of: these two candidates Mr Horace' Baker is in every respect immeasurably : the better man.
